Life & Work with Julia Ethington of Cameron, Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Ethington.

Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for dance began at age five, and I have been captivated by the art form ever since. Whether it’s been training, competing, performing, teaching, choreographing, or assisting in shows, I have dedicated my life to dance. When I was seventeen, I began teaching at Meri’s Dance Studio, spending nearly ten years learning the ways of the business and how to run the studio. I am thrilled to take on a new role in the dance world as the new studio owner, and guide the next generation of dancers toward success.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because I started teaching dance at 17, I had no idea how different it would be to own my own studio and be teaching 160 students eight years later. I had so much to learn about the daily demands of running a business, and what a deep impact I could truly make in the lives of my students. I’m so grateful for my former employer, who was a true mentor in every way possible, but I can see now that nothing can prepare you for all of the twists and turns, like a pretty big remodeling project at the studio last summer. Through it all, I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason and always works out for the best!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our studio offers recreational and competitive dance for children ages 2 -18. We specialize in a variety of dance styles, including jazz, ballet, acrobatics, lyrical, tap, and musical theatre etc. Our studio has been known for years as being one of the oldest woman-owned businesses in our city, and I am so proud to continue that tradition. We stand out for being family oriented: our end product, whether it be costumes, music, props, storytelling, always centers around character building and teamwork. We realize that what our students learn in our studio will ripple throughout the rest of their life journey long after they are done being students here at Legacy.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
After a long day of teaching children, I often unwind by binge-watching murder mysteries and true crime!
