Life & Work with Joelle Six

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joelle Six.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from Mauritius, a beautiful tropical island situated about 700 miles east of Madagascar. I’ve been in the US for nearly 4 years now. Well, the question I’ve always been asked is “why did you leave a paradise island to come here in Kansas City, Missouri with that kind of weather? ” I always answer with a smile “Love”… Yes, I met my amazing husband while I was on vacation here (2 days before leaving 😊) we kept in touch and one day he surprised me and traveled more than 30 hours to come see me. After some time, we decided to get married. And here I am, enjoying every bit of being in the US.

My love for baking started since I was a little girl from all the wonderful memories I had with my grandma. She could bake anything from scratch and would sacrifice so much for us. I remember we would refer her house as “Eating Paradise” Eating once we step in her house till we leave, without forgetting the to-go bags she would pack for us!

I always loved baking and was encouraged to have my own bakery for years but I was always hesitant, asking myself thousands of questions just like so many people would. But my husband is the one who always pushes me out of my comfort zone. And believe me, that’s the best way to learn!

When I told him a little bit more than a year ago that I was thinking that I would take some baking courses just as a hobby, he started mentioning about a baking business, a shop, etc. Honestly, I said, ” no no no not for now”! But that didn’t stop him. One day he came back home with a lot of pans (of all shapes), baking supplies, and said ” Have fun” And every week he was bringing more n more. Our 2nd living room turned out being a store and bakery.

I finally agreed to start taking small orders which turned out to be big orders every now and then… weddings, birthdays, events, shipping to other parts of the US. Since the house was too small to cater for all of that we finally opened our shop on September 1st, 2021.

And I would say no matter how challenging it is, I am enjoying every single day and love welcoming our customers every day!

So, what do I bake?… ehhh a little bit of everything…cupcakes, cookies, pastries & Scones. My specialty are the scones …yes, I have 36 flavors of sweet & savory scones so far and we are still working on new flavors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been smooth all the time. Moving to a different country and learning a complete new culture is never easy. But with time and patience we get there.

And working 16-17 hours a day is hard.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a baker and together with my husband we own our bakery.

I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in such a short time.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
All the wonderful memories I spent with my grandma. She could bake anything.
