Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Ervin.
Hi Jill, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a nature girl at heart even as a child. When I started pursuing nature and landscape photography, I knew that the photography wasn’t necessarily my passion, but my passion was for nature and wildlife. Photography was the most natural way for me to express that passion. I started pursuing nature photography over 12 years ago with a very small and much older Sony Cyber Shot Digital Camera. I wanted to explore more of Missouri’s landscapes and find new exciting locations to photograph. I eventually saved enough money to purchase a much nice camera, a Canon 70D. It took a while to learn about my new camera but once I did, I was eager to keep capturing more of nature’s beauty. I learned to see nature’s abstract shapes and utilize them in my photography. Nature photography can communicate a lot without using words, and nature is full of stories waiting to be told. Every landscape, every animal, and every element of the natural world is part of a bigger picture. Our beautiful state of Missouri is full of stunning river views, never ending plains, miles of tall trees and forested Ozark mountains of which I am very excited to photograph.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a professional nature photographer, takes time and years of dedication. Most people do not do this profession for the money, but for their passion of nature, wildlife and landscapes. Like with any profession there are always unpredictable elements for example, the weather, wildlife or even the higher cost of camera equipment. I have personally learned to take this profession in steps and accomplishing achievable goals to help stay focused. Camera equipment and lenses are very costly, and can require significant money for any photographer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a native to Iowa but have lived in Missouri for over 20 years. I am a local nature and landscape photographer in Northwest Missouri including Kansas City, Missouri. I have been photographing Missouri’s beautiful landscapes, stunning sunsets, beautiful river views and the abundance of trees. I focus particularly on Midwestern nature photography and will continue to explore the Midwest through my photography.
What are your plans for the future?
One of my biggest goals for my nature photography, is my first published photography book. My photographs have been published on websites, calendars, books and magazines, but this would be a book that would feature a large collaboration of my nature photographs. There will be more to come on my photography book in the future.
