Today we’d like to introduce you to Hiep Nguyen.
Hi Hiep, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Hiep Nguyen; I was born and raised in the south of Vietnam; after graduating from high school, I could go to the US to learn and develop myself. I started from the bottom, no question, and with many challenges like culture, especially language, after 5 years of studying and trying many jobs such as serving, cooking, home repair, and working at the machine shop. After all, I had a predestined career as a barber, graduated in 2018 from Paul Mitchell, and had the opportunity to work at PrimeTime for 5 years before Buckets Studio. And yes, now I’m a leader at Buckets Studio full-time.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is easy. Start from the bottom, no question; with an 18-year-old young man in a new country, I started making friends, learning to drive, and having difficulties in culture, language, and finance. Still, I believe “challenges” are born for successful people. Fortunately, “giving up” has never been an option for me. And I keep learning to this day. Someone told me, “When you stop learning, you will start losing.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am a barber and the manager of Buckets Studio, with the criterion “more than just a haircut” no matter what the clients are doing, how the day is, or personal happiness or sadness. But when it comes to Buckets, normally, we cut 45mins for a haircut; our mission is to give them a comfortable feeling and a fun environment and ensure customers get the haircut they want. Most clients come back every 2 weeks for a haircut, so the relationship between them and I builds up from there; sometimes, I think they see me more than their friends or family. What I like most about my job is having the opportunity to meet many different types of clients. I never sit down in my chair and what they do out there, so it always opportunities for me to network and learn more about them, especially when I cut kids or businessmen. It’s always fun to create content and talk about it so I can understand more about our market(beauty industry), which is what I am good at.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned and recognized that social media is so important for my business. And I use it to build businesses around what I love, such as reels/photos/videos every day from cutting hair. And attention is the most important thing I focus on to elevate my business.
