Life & Work with Devaughn Goodlow of Grandview, Mo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devaughn Goodlow

Hi Devaughn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At 26 years old Kansas City bassist and multi-instrumentalist i pride myself in bringing a soulful touch to the world of R&B. Starting at age 13, i honed my skills on drums, piano, and finally, the bass, drawing inspiration from greats like Rahiem DeVaughn, Anthony Hamilton and Victor Wooten.
With three singles already available, I’m preparing to release a new album exploring the ups and downs of love and relationships.
Growing up around great musicians has pushed me to make music that gives both musicians and casual listeners a blend of technical prowess and heartfelt emotion. I started in church, and now I get to spread love and creativity all across the city.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been rough, last 2 years dealing with homelessness and the lost of my grandma has thrown a few wrenches in the mix. Learning the business has been an obstacle as well

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
On the day to day I create and produce music for myself and others as well as being a pro bassist for hire . I’m most proud of my music because it has been almost 20 years since I got started and I’m able to touch others with my projects and art in a way that I would’ve be able to had I not kept pushing to grow as a musician/artist .
I believe I have a knack for mixing the old school with the new in a way that touches all age groups and I believe my music is timeless. I believe that’s what sets me apart from others. I don’t follow the status quo on anything honestly. Friends will say I’m a contrarian.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Kansas City breeds some of the best creatives in the country and no matter where you go , you’ll atumble upon raw talent every single time! The city doesn’t miss!

I dislike the relationship artists and bands have. If I could change it I would encourage more collaborations and group projects . We don’t have too many happening. It saddens me to see us competing with each other when we could be stronger together! Not the worst thing in the world through! There’s always time and space for new opportunities! I’d just like to see us be more open minded and willing to lift each other up as opposed to competing. A little competition is healthy. Too much competition can lay the foundation for the crab in the bucket mentality.
