Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejon Thompson.
Hi dejon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The funny thing is that starting a lawn care company was never part of the plan. I bought my first house at 22, and the yard was huge. I was pushing a little 21 inch mower, and it took me a couple of days just to cut my own grass. I finally said forget this and bought a commercial walk behind mower just to save time. Once I saw how fast I finished my yard, it clicked. I realized I could make some money with this thing.
I made a few phone calls, picked up about ten customers immediately, loaded the mower into the back of a pickup truck, grabbed a weed eater, and got to work. I did not even have a blower at the time. I used a broom and pure determination. From that point on, I reinvested every dollar I earned. I bought a trailer, upgraded my equipment, added a commercial stand on mower, and built Thompson and Sons one yard at a time.
All of this was happening while I was working full time for Kansas City Water Services and raising a family. I have always believed in moving with purpose, even when life feels chaotic. Every extra hour went into building a name and a business rooted in integrity, consistency, and long term vision.
Over time, that one unexpected opportunity grew into multiple business ventures. Thompson and Sons Enterprise LLC expanded into landscaping, snow removal, property maintenance, and real estate investments and property management, which became a major part of my long term plans for generational wealth. From there, I launched Show Me State Roll Offs LLC, offering dumpster rentals, junk removal, and cleanout services across Kansas City. I am also working on additional ventures that align with my larger vision for my family and my community.
I have taken losses, learned hard lessons, and faced moments where quitting might have been the easier option. I have heard people say that mistakes are just stepping stones, and I believe that is true. Life has a way of teaching you through every experience, and you never stop learning. With everything I have been through, I am committed to building a legacy that my children can stand on, grow from, and be proud of long after I am gone.
Today, what started with a big yard, a commercial mower, and a broom has grown into multiple companies, a growing real estate portfolio, and a vision that continues to expand. I am still hungry. I am still learning. And I am still building it one brick at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is really no such thing as a smooth road for an entrepreneur unless something fully developed was handed to you and all you had to do was keep it in motion. But when you are building something from the ground up, it is never easy. At least I have never seen it.
You are constantly researching, studying the business, trying to understand the changes coming ahead. There is always new equipment, new processes, new technology, always a new or better way to do things. Being an entrepreneur is constant education, and you have to have the vision to see a little bit into the future. And on top of all that, you have to keep investing back into the business to keep it growing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I operate multiple businesses that all revolve around service, reliability, and improving communities. I run Thompson and Sons Enterprise LLC, where we provide lawn care, landscaping, property maintenance, and snow removal. I also own Show Me State Roll Offs LLC, a roll off dumpster rental company that serves homeowners, contractors, and property managers throughout Kansas City. In addition to that, I provide clean and affordable housing. I believe people deserve to live comfortably, and I take pride in maintaining properties that reflect that standard.
What sets me apart is my approach. I treat every project like my name is on it, because it is. I do not cut corners, and I do not disappear when things get difficult. I focus on integrity, consistency, and going the extra mile, whether it is cutting a yard, dropping off a dumpster, or helping a client solve a problem that is outside the original scope. My goal is always to add value, not just complete a job.
I take pride in building businesses that serve people, create opportunities, and leave a positive impact on the city I grew up in. That is what drives me, and that is what makes my work meaningful.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is legacy and impact.
I want to build something my children can grow from and be proud of long after I’m gone. I care about improving my community, providing clean and affordable housing, and creating opportunities that outlive me. At the end of the day, it’s about the name I leave behind and the difference I make while I’m here.
