Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Lamb.
Hi Danny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was 12 years old when I started voice lessons.
Mom forcing me to take them after a conversation that she had with a retired Singer from the Phantom Of The Opera, who taught voice lessons, and had identified a good little Boy Soprano voice inside of me.
Little did I know that, that conversation would lead to me not only discovering the voice, and performer, in me, but lead me to founding Danny Lamb School Of Music and a vehicle for change called ‘A Song, A City’ – Using music as a tool to bring people together as a way of connecting, celebrating, and amplifying, the voices, stories, and abilities across our Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, and Disability Community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was diagnosed with a Brain Condition known as Hydrocephalus when I was 3 years old.
A plastic tube, and valve, known as a shunt, inserted into my brain.
It keeps me alive, and healthy, and will live with me forever.
It wasn’t until, at 14 years old, that my shunt broke not once, but twice, 2 weeks apart.
I was rushed back into Emergency Brain Surgery and, soon after my surgeries, told I could no longer do the one thing that I lived and loved to do.
Play soccer.
More than a game, Soccer gave me a sense of belonging, community, identity, and confidence.
Forced, at 14 years old, to redefine myself as a young person living with a Brain Condition, and learning Disability, made spaces like the Classroom, somewhere that I never did well, that much more challenging and hard.
It pushed me into a state of sadness, call it depression, and deep hurt.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Entrepreneur, Music School Owner, and Humanitarian.
As somebody who lives with a Disability, I also work alongside many other humans who also live with Disabilities.
Through Music, it’s an incredible privilege to help people living with Disabilities see the power inside of themselves. Some discovering this power for the first time.
Helping people tell their story, and song, through Music, is something I get to do everyday, and this is a privilege that is not lost on me.
Creating a space that people feel safe, able, and empowered, is the kind of space that I hope to continue to grow and evolve for years to come.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Niagara Falls! I love the Falls!
I don’t think that there’s much that I dislike.
