Life & Work with Claudia And Katie B. of Other

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia And Katie B..

Hi Claudia and Katie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
MoonMagic Dance is a dance duo made up of twins, Claudia and Katie, from Springfield, Missouri. We perform to J-Pop, Vocaloid and English songs at local/out of state conventions and cultural events. Our dancing journey began in 2018.

Back in 2015, we discovered cosplay. Katie and I were very new to it and interested in what it was all about. We were like, “What is this? This is so weird….I want to be like that too!” So we purchased our first cosplays, Naruto and Sakura from the anime Naruto, and it continued from there.

We eventually discovered music videos and dances online through YouTube and started learning the dance covers people had posted.

Through the years, we have performed on stage at events throughout the Midwest, such as Naka Kon in Overland Park, Kansas, and the Japanese Fall Festival in Springfield, MO. We have been invited as guests to perform at a few local events around the area. Along with performing on stage, we love to upload dance covers, including some original choreographed dances to our YouTube channel and Instagram page.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road for us. Sometimes the dances that we learn or make can take a while to get down, and we have moments where we get burned out and need a break, but we believe that practice and believing in our abilities brings us back motivated again.

Our desire is to share our passion while being a light to others, hoping to bring a smile to everyone’s face and brighten their day. We thank God for the gift of the talents we have, and the doors He has opened for us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
MoonMagic Dance is a twin dance duo who dances to J-Pop, Vocaloid and English songs at conventions and events around the Midwest.

We came across a video on YouTube one day in pursuit of knowledge on cosplay, and discovered a Jaden Yuki (Yu-Gi-Oh!) cosplayer dancing to a Japanese Vocaloid song called “Happy Synthesizer”. There was one part in the song where it kind of looks like a chicken and clapping, and we thought it looked so fun and silly. After watching the dance cover, we decided that we wanted to do it too! We learned the whole dance and were so excited to show it to our parents! They have been supportive of our endeavors the whole way and we are grateful. We came to love Vocaloid and J-Pop rather quickly after that, by watching music videos, MMD (MikuMiku Dance) and anime.

We are both introverted and more of the observer type, but we like to do things that bring us out of our comfort zones to experience new opportunities. We love being creative, so we are always finding things that inspire and motivate us. We see dancing as an enjoyable and creative outlet. We like to work on cosplays for anime conventions, although we aren’t the greatest at sewing and making things, we always try our best with what we do! We love to put our own personal touch on the pieces we make, like gluing gold trim to a vest, adding ruffles to a skirt, sewing on buttons, etc. We also love putting together matching outfits! You can start small. One quote that has stuck with us is, if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong!

Through the years, we’ve done countless cosplay characters. Sometimes we feel like we’re incognito when we go from one character to the next, especially when they are the complete opposite personality/appearance. Our favorite characters to do are the Vocaloids Rin and Len. Once we started going to conventions, we found people that shared the same excitement about the things we loved too.

Aside from cosplay, dancing gives us so much joy. It’s something we are very passionate about. There are so many songs and dance styles out there to have fun with and learn. We just enjoy being ourselves and have a good time!

What were you like growing up?
We were always doing something together (and still are!) growing up, whether it was playing outside in the yard, dancing, playing games or drawing our favorite things. We’ve had a knack for creativity and adventure since we were very young. We never really thought that dancing would become such a big part of our life, but we wouldn’t have it another way.
