Today we’d like to introduce you to Chante’ Campbell-Nixon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I independently published my first novel, HERESY, in November 2020, but it was a long road to get there. I had been working on the novel in some form or fashion for 12 years prior. The story and the characters have grown with me – there’s a big difference between 15 and 28, after all. I am now publishing the next book in The Heretics Saga: DISSENT on November 8, 2022.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth roads are boring! I would say the biggest challenge that I’ve faced, and continue to face, is balancing all the different hats that I try to wear. Besides being an indie author, I am also a nurse practitioner and a nursing professor. That’s three entire jobs! And that doesn’t begin to take in account that I’m a wife and a new mom to a busy toddler. The juggling act is always difficult– keeping so many balls in the air. However, it’s always worth it to chase your dreams, and each one – writing, nursing, teaching, and being a wife/mother – are beautiful dreams of mine.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the independent author of The Heretics Saga, which is a young adult dystopian romance series. It is frequently compared to books like The Hunger Games and Divergent series. The Heretics Saga follows a group of teenagers and young adults as they try to survive in a world where being different – or really, being who you truly are – is dangerous. The two main characters – the daughter of outlaws and the son of the nation’s leaders.- are forced together when a bomb goes off at a national event and soon they find themselves entangled in a rebel movement. I am so proud to be writing this series because it frequently challenges me as the author to explore complicated topics like prejudice, religion, equality, and acceptance. I’ve learned a lot about myself along the way, and I hope it makes readers think about the world we live in – and maybe inspires them to make it better.
If anyone is interested in my books, they are available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The first three chapters of HERESY can be read for free. Further info can be found in my link tree.
What does success mean to you?
I think the definition of success is different to each person. I think I often fall into the trap of constantly setting the invisible bar higher and higher. Like, maybe if I’m on the NY time best sellers list or maybe if I just sell 1000 copies, it’ll finally be enough to make me happy. When in reality, if you aren’t happy now, whatever goal you set for yourself won’t make you happy. I am constantly redefining success and reminding myself that success is found in the little things. Success is one person who finds and falls in love with my books. Success is a patient who feels heard and valued by myself as their provider. Success is one of my student’s understanding of a difficult concept. Success is my family being happy and healthy. Success is finding joy in the journey and not just the destination.
