Life & Work with Brandon And Otis Roper of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon And Otis Roper

Hi Brandon and Otis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Otis and Brandon Roper were born and raised in Kansas City. The sons of sharecropping parents, their father an army veteran, postal worker, and minister. At the same time, their mother was a librarian, educator, and African American folk storyteller. The two were raised in a local church, Bales Temple C.O.G.I.C., and performed musical duties as drummer(Otis) and organist (Brandon).

Being raised by a storyteller and a preacher made them love great narratives, and eventually a lifelong love affair with the motion picture developed. One of the biggest passions of the two brothers growing up was movies. Motion pictures offered a way for the brothers to imagine and escape routine. Watching movies is when their family was the most happy, united, and fun. Watching films like Top Gun, Back to the Future, The Three Amigos, InnerSpace, Gremlins, the Burbs, and Better Off Dead helped propel the brothers towards their particular style of comedy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Time is our biggest challenge. We are both regular people with regular 9 to 5 jobs. Brandon is a full-time high school history teacher, Otis has 3 children at home, and one adult son. Managing our time to be able to do this has been a constant challenge. Brandon is the primary editor so sometimes this creates a bottleneck on content. Also we don’t have access to many movie premieres which would help us get a head start on reviews.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Otis and Brandon love movies because they are great escapes and they help convey parts of the human experience. The emotions of a scene can help to communicate profound empathy. A corny movie might be awesome if the tone is done well. movies, like people, vary wildly and can all be enjoyed for different reasons.

One of the reasons they started their YouTube channel is to help spread that love of movies. In today’s world, going to the theater is diminishing with the rise of streaming. But we hope to inspire people with our reviews. Especially for young people, watching movies used to be a grand cultural experience, and we all were better for it. It’s cool that we’re able to watch many more things now, but we hope that movies will continue to be a pastime that people go to the theater for, for years to come.

The videos they put out are fun, and light-hearted, and they joke a lot using film references and television. The brothers have tons of fun doing it, while providing some good analysis too. At the heart of the channel is the desire to inform fellow moviegoers and pop culture junkies as well as the rank and file viewers about the latest Hollywood offerings. Not only for movie snobs but people who might like an oddball movie or appreciate a risk taken by a director.
