Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth King.
Hi Beth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve known about color analysis since I was a child. My grandmother had her colors done back in the 80’s when it was popular, and I used to read the “Color Me Beautiful” book she had at her home. Growing up, I always loved fashion. I really wanted to do something in fashion as an adult, but like many others, life took me in a different direction. I did the “safe” thing, and went to business school instead of fashion school. Long story short, I majored in Marketing Management, and ended up in a completely different career from what I had imagined. I spent 15 years in manufacturing, 14 of those being at a large, well-respected company. My plan was to stay there until it was time to retire, climb the ladder, and hopefully feel like I had accomplished something. As I continued to climb, and the organization continued to grow, I found myself feeling more frustrated and empty than fulfilled. This was also during the period that I became a mom and my priorities were shifting. I couldn’t see myself staying in that game for another 30+ years, and I knew things needed to change. It was the fall of 2023 when I made the decision to get certified in color analysis, and see what I could do with it. Getting my own colors done the year before was life-changing. I had been talking about getting certified for years before that, but never took action because I was so focused on my career. Starting a business on the side was foreign, and I had to learn all new things. I’ve been building ever since, and my business has evolved so much. To date, I have done color analysis for over 1,500 women and men, and I also offer closet edits and styling services. I’m not completely fulfilled in my career, and love helping others look and feel their best.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any business journey is a “smooth” road. There were so many sacrifices required, especially in the beginning. I started work at 4am every day to work on the business before going into my job every day. I am still working on the weekend, which means time away from my family. One of the biggest challenges was mustering up the courage to leave my career behind. I’ve never been so anxious than I was two years ago when I resigned. I also took a contract role in between leaving my role at the larger company, and fully exiting last year. The environment at the new company was terrible, and the time dragged on while I was in it. It was difficult showing up everyday to a job you don’t are about, when all you want to do is grow your business.
Another struggle has been learning all of the new systems, and tying together different tech platforms. Putting systems in place is so important to me to be able to deliver the best service possible. When you’re in corporate, you have a team to figure it all out, or rely on your IT department. When it’s just you, you figure it out, or pay someone a lot of money to do it all for you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a personal stylist and certified color analyst who works with founders and leaders. I am known mostly for color analysis in the Kansas City area because this is the service I started the business with. I’ve added other services to my offer suite. I’m getting busier with closet edits and personal shopping, and I love it! My specialty is putting “style systems” into place for my clients to take the stress out of getting dressed. Many of the women I work with are busy professionals and entrepreneurs who want to look good, and understand the importance of their image. They have a thousand decisions to make every day, so I make their closet work for them. I also have a subscription service, “Style Your Season”, where we send 100+ links in your color palette to you every month, and handle light styling requests. I’m so proud of what has been built up to this point, but I am most proud of my tenacity to keep going. What sets me apart is that I have walked in my client’s shoes. I know what it’s like to have a demanding career, juggling all of the things, and wanting to make sure that my image can keep up.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I loved summer trips to Disney. I am a big Disney fan. I was also thinking about the time I went to the NSYNC concert in 5th grade. If they do a reunion tour, I’m there!
