Life & Work with Audrey Lockwood of Independence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Lockwood

Audrey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been designing clothing since I was able to draw. Not always super well, but always vivd ideas in my mind for clothing. I started to sew in middle school and soon after I was selling headbands at ballet class and upcycled denim shorts on Etsy. I decided to pursue a degree in Fashion Design and Product Development at Stephens College, as well as studying abroad at London College of Fashion. I knew from my experience in college and through internships that I did not want to work in a corporate design environment. Upon graduating college I started Devil Doll, with a showing of my first collection at KCFW. Since then I have shown collections around the KC metro area. My brand breathes loud color and vibrant textures, with a strong vintage and pop culture inspiration. I have been developing Devil Doll for 7 years and have exciting new collections coming out soon!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have experienced a lot of adversity in my professional life. Curve balls are to be expected, especially in the fashion industry. Creativity ebbs and flows and it can be very hard to be your own boss. I would say my biggest obstacle is myself and the imposter syndrome that comes with being a creative. It is easy to doubt my designs and become indecisive about my end goal. I also feel a lot of overwhelm because I have so many ideas and can’t channel them quickly enough.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a conceptual fashion designer for my brand Devil Doll. My clothing has a strong emphasis on femininity. I find a lot of inspiration in vintage dress and pop culture. I produce conceptual collections that are also every day wearable pieces. My designs stand out because of my strong attention to texture, color, and the wearer, Everything I create is made-to-measure by myself from beginning to final product. I additionally do commission work and alterations!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I think it’s important to have those podcasts that are your guilty pleasures while you’re in a work cram session. I always gravitate to true crime, but I also love motivational podcasts and books. Manifestation Babe and The Sabrina Zohar Show are two great podcasts for personal growth! All self help books are motivators for me as well.

Pricing:

  • Since my clothing is made to order and often commissioned the price can range to $50-$500 typically depending on the piece.
