Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Alexander Aka Disa.
Hi Andrea Alexander , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing hair in 2000 when I was in college I always been able to braid. My cousin was at the same university as I asked me to do his hair but we never had anything correct so I started doing hair at the library and Lincoln university. At that time I was in need of money being a college student to be the campus hairstylist and learn how to do twist and hair with braids after four years it was a steady income. I graduated from school. I started out it into hair naturally and perfecting my craft and the instruction of Theresa Miller.. after several years of doing hair, I collaborated with Aisha Ogletree. She definitely is a household name. I was so happy to be able to work with her. She showed me so many different avenues on how to hone in to my craft. Under the instruction of Aisha Ogletree, I was able to work the stellar awards in Las Vegas, where I was able to meet several gospel celebrities and also made my own connections. I also had the pleasure of working the Kansas City draft doing make up for models during the chief draft season.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, Hair was a saving grave being a single mother in between jobs. It was always a form of income. I decided to take a seriously after Covid and get my license and open my first salon in the historic 18 and Vine District.
Even be in a historic area in the city, the crime rate was still high, so I redirected my journey to a small studio downtown. From being downtown, I decided to open up my own salon. It took lots of patience and understanding to run such a large scale business successfully. I had four other stylist that worked in the salon. It was thriving. It was love and the city knew who we were. Unfortunately the line did not work out as planned, but I’m still located here in the city in the Locc box natural hair salon is still thriving.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
