Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Nubia Duin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, let’s see, let me go back to how I got to the States… I was born in Mexico City and at the age of 14 I came to California for vacation but after spending the summer there I decided to stay and go to school. From California, we moved to Arkansas because the company my dad worked for relocated to Little Rock, AR. When I turned 19, I moved out of my dad’s house. All I had was a suitcase and $200 dollars in my pocket. I did not even have a car nor a driver’s license, but one thing I did have was a great work ethic. I moved to a place called Fayetteville, AR. There I got a job at the Sam’s home office and that is where I met a lady whose husband worked at a Spanish Radio station and she mentioned that they were looking for a bilingual receptionist, so I applied and got the job. I loved that job but I was able to move on up within the company, from receptionist I became traffic assistant, then traffic director, from there I started doing sales for the Spanish Radio Station, then became program director, music director, and after a few years. I moved to Kansas City, where my boss bought a radio station and sent me to run it. La Zeta was the first 24-hour Spanish radio station in Kansas City. I worked for him for a few more years. Sadly, I left radio and went into the home loan world (I have to be honest with you) I did not like it much or maybe I was not at the right company, from there I had my third kid and decided to stay home. After 1 year I started my own housekeeping company and ran that for 10 years. One day out of the blue my husband came to me and said he wanted to have his own Spanish Radio station, did I mention that is how I met my husband of almost 20 years, while working at La Zeta in Kansas City he came to apply for a job, got hired, fell in love and the rest is history. So, when he said that he wanted his own radio station I was hesitant at first, just for the simple fact that my business was doing great. I was scared but the we talked and my husband said “you know radio better than anyone I know” We are going to do great. We planned it, programmed it and that is when La Mega KC was born. We leased a signal 1160 am we had that signal for 4 and a half years… towards the end of the year 2019 we made the decision to take our radio online. We said ok everyone does everything on their phones, so how about we get our own app and just go online full time. The decision was not too easy, we said ok either it goes great or we try something else. I called all of my clients, explained the situation and 95% of them stayed with us. 2020 came and so did COVID I have to be honest with you it was tough but at the same time, it was a good decision we made since we did not have those big expenses when we had the signal. We are working hard every day and making things happen for my clients. We help promote businesses who want to reach the Latino community in Kansas and the great thing about having an app is anywhere in the world who downloads it can listen to us. I love my job, I love what I do and by having this job it has brought me a lot of opportunities like been a board member for the Kansas City Zoo, the humane society of Greater Kansas City. I am blessed to do what I do and to help our community. There is still a lot more I want to do, so just stay tuned.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not always easy, we had to start from scratch. First, we used all of our savings; we had no existing clients… we had to call businesses and introduce ourselves because we were new, we had a new station and a new product. One thing that helped us a lot are the connections we made in the past and the fact that people knew us and trusted us. At first, we were putting in 12 – 16 hours a day workdays. We worked 7 days a week, no family vacations, no personal time… no family time…
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am in the radio business, sales, and marketing. I do a lot of videos on social media to promote other businesses. I love to network and meet people, I am a people person, but I was not always like that, my husband had a lot to do with that, he encourages me a lot. He is my biggest fan and sometimes also my critic. I am proud of many things, but I am proud of the times we raised over 12,000 thousand dollars to help the victims from the Mexican earthquake, We also raised over 12,000 for the victims from the eruption of the Volcano in Guatemala… What sets us apart from others is the customer service we give to each client. We treat everyone with respect and the same. I keep my promises and We love to help.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a very active girl, I liked to be the leader. I was involved in sports, basketball was my favorite, I loved riding my bike, playing outside with my friends. I loved dancing so I was always involved in dance groups. It was usually traditional dances where I got to go to different states and compete. I was always picked to be in a play or some kind of extracurricular activity at school. I loved music so I was also in the church choir and was very involved in my church even as young as 7 years old.
