Life & Work with Amanda Rushly of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Rushly.

Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From 8th grade on I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. I was in love with all things beauty-hair, skin, makeup and nails. I have a twin sister that, bless her soul, always let me practice crazy Pinterest hairstyles on her. I even shampooed my moms hair with a garden hose in our yard to “practice being a “hairstylist”
After high school I went to Independence College of Cosmetology. After 2 years or so I was a licensed stylist! I started out at Beauty Brands in 2019. The next year was Covid, it was really hard to build and keep clientele as everyone just needed their hair done. In 2023 I made the decision to booth rent at Beauty Empire Salon in Raymore. I am in love with the space I have at Beauty Empire Salon. My fiancé and I have 3 kids, and making my own schedule works best for us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No way! Cosmetology school alone is a- only the strong will survive- situation. Then Covid the year after I got out into the real hair world was really difficult. We were closed for 2 months and then everyone just wanted to get in anywhere they could. After Covid dimmed down a bit I just kept my head down and showed up for my clients everyday.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to do all things hair color! I love a good lived in blonde/brunette but I’m also up for the challenge of a color correction/vivid color. In my salon though, I am known for doing perms. It is such an old school thing that not many stylist enjoy doing but it’s making its way back into style! I love to roll a perm and completly change the way someone looks and feels about themselves. I am most proud of my dedication to never stop learning. Hair is constantly evolving into something cooler, brighter, bigger! It’s so important to keep up on taking classes and learning the new trends.

How do you define success?
Success to me is what I have
A job I get excited to go to and love doing
And a home filled with people I love to come home to
