Life & Work with Allison Bowman of Olathe, KS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Bowman.

Hi Allison, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved making art and being creative from a very young age. I went to college to study art and received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Kansas State University in 2017, which kickstarted my creative practice. After I graduated I moved from Manhattan, KS to Kansas City and engrained myself into the art community here by working in galleries, arts non-profit organizations, and participating in exhibitions and public art projects around the city. Since I moved to the Kansas City area I’ve participated in exhibitions, city art projects like Art In The Loop and Parade of Hearts, painted murals in both Kansas and Missouri, and got to fulfill my dream of owning a sticker vending machine!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think being younger and new to the community was the biggest struggle for me. A lot of the opportunities I’ve had so far have come from just putting myself and my work out there and connecting with people, which is sometimes hard to do as an introvert. I think just showing up for events and openings has really been beneficial along the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a background in painting but have been experimenting with mixed media over the past few years. I create and explore imagined spaces enshrouded by nature. My pieces invite humans to explore and discover throughout pockets of light and dark. By using a variety of materials, such as paint, cut paper, pressed plants, and found images, I seek to convey the complexity and depth of our connections as humans to nature. My work invites viewers to explore their own inner worlds and the ways in which they are connected to the world around them. These pieces are reminders of the beauty and power that lies within each of us. The potential for growth and transformation is always present, whether we are aware of it or not.
