Life & Work with Aimee Bernstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aimee Bernstein.

Hi Aimee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a mom to two biological kids (from my first marriage) and two bonus kids from my second marriage. I am the partner to the most loyal & honest human in the world. I am a jewelry designer with an online business, I am a fitness instructor, I am a friend and avid volunteer.

It was a blessing in disguise having had the opportunity to find love for the second time. Everyone always says make lemonade out of lemons but if you haven’t ever been in a situation that was sour, it isn’t easy to find the sweetness. I am so lucky I had the support of family and friends to get me through a very difficult time in my life. After my first marriage ended, I had the opportunity to find a more complete & beautiful life… The partnership, support and true love I found with my husband of now 10.5 years has taught me so much. Nobody can change the past so putting energy into the future was the only option. Pushing forward, staying positive and not letting the little things or negativity bring me down helped me become a more whole person.

Having a blended family is difficult for some people to understand. Who is that kid’s father, is that your child together? I have two biological kids with my first husband. My oldest is 18 and going off to college in the fall. My younger is 15 and will be a sophomore in High School. My oldest bonus son is 21 living in Utah and youngest bonus daughter is 16 and also a sophomore in High School. Having blended our family was by far the best thing I could have done for my boys. They now have more love is in their lives, a bonus dad and two bonus siblings.

My love for jewelry started at a young age looking through my grandmother’s bobbles. When I was young, I always had projects going. Stringing beads making clay figures etc. I took a silversmithing class in HS and that is when I started selling some pieces. In College, I needed some extra cash so I went to the local bead shop and started selling necklaces that matched people’s dresses for sorority formals. B.Spoke, Be Well Worn Jewelry (b.wellworn.com) was created in 2015 and has been running strong ever since. I join materials together in unexpected ways—from brushed metal to leather to diamonds—I make jewelry in the hopes that people will discover something unique that reflects their own rare beauty.

Being healthy has always been important to me. I started taking group fitness classes after college. I wasn’t the person who you always saw at the gym just took a class every so often. One morning, years later I was sitting waiting for class to start and another participant thought I was the instructor and started asking me questions. At that time, the company I had been working at for 15 years had just gone out of business. I thought to myself if she thought I was an instructor, why not be one. It was as if I had been waiting for that opportunity for my entire life. It blended two things I loved, fitness and getting to be with people. So, I started getting fitness certifications. I have been teaching group fitness for over ten years now. I work with people of all ages. From intense core workouts to low-impact senior fitness. Working in multi-generational facilities has been such an inspiration in my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No roads are smooth. Thats what makes life worth living. Challenges and overcoming them made me who I am. I was married at 24, way too young and divorced by I think 31 or 32… can’t remember. The most difficult part was I had a three year old and a baby when we got separated. I was working and trying to hold my life together while I felt like the world I knew was crumbling around me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most proud of my family but I can talk about my Jewelry business. I love putting raw materials together with diamonds. I think it gives my pieces an edgy look that is versatile and can be work with things most people already have. I say if you have it, wear it.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have so many amazing childhood memories. Friday night shabbat dinners with my family (we are Jewish) Sandwiches on Sunday afternoons with my parents and grandparents. Summer camp in Wisconsin.
