Life & Work with Abigael Elliott of Lee’s Summit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigael Elliott.

Hi Abigael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I originally started college with sky-high aspirations of becoming an aerospace engineer, yet my intro to physics class told me otherwise. From there, I decided to take an art class, both for fun and to see if I would enjoy creating something that wouldn’t spontaneously combust as a career. Straightaway, I fell in love with art and quickly switched gears to graphic design.

In spring of 2019, I graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a BFA in Graphic Design. That summer, I started as an intern at a studio in downtown Kansas City where I was then hired on as a full-time designer. During my three years there, I was upgraded to Jr. Art Director. I got to work on so many projects from packaging, branding, and even help art direct some dog photoshoots (still one of the funnest days ever!).

In 2023, I decided to try my hand at freelancing. It was scary at first, but so exciting, as well! I was interested in book cover design, so I got in contact with a small publisher in Kansas City. They took a chance on me, and I quickly found my passion in cover design. Two years later, I’m now their head designer, and I even get to lead my own small team of designers there!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Design is one of those awesome careers where, if you put in enough time and commitment, you can achieve your goals. But you also have to be fluid and adapt to what you are given. I had many ideas of what I wanted to do within design—like branding, packaging, animation—but I just had to start actually making those things to realize, “Hey, maybe branding isn’t for me.” And then I started thinking, “Oh, maybe I’d like book design?”

I also found that knowing people and genuinely connecting with other designers (whether it’s an email of thanks or asking for advice, etc.) can unlock opportunities you never knew existed. But in the end, you still have to show up daily and work hard.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a cover designer, I love to help authors visually capture their stories in unique, eye-catching ways. I primarily work with nonfiction, but I’ve been wanting to expand my horizons to more fiction lately! Often, authors tell me that I was able to create something they had in their mind and make it even better. That always makes me the happiest!

On the side, I have some other creative outlets. I dabble in fibers, making tapestries and macrame hanging art. I was chosen as a Parade of Hearts artist in 2024, where I took my fiber skills to a whole new dimension with a 3D heart made out of plastic fibers that could withstand the elements.

I also can’t escape books! I love to bind my old paperbacks into one-of-a-kind hardbacks for my shelf. I also adore writing, and am currently working on a YA fantasy series.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d love to give a shout-out to my wonderful husband, Daniel! He is my number one idea-giver and biggest supporter in everything I do.
