We’re looking forward to introducing you to Paul Dorrell. Check out our conversation below.
Paul, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
As an art consultant and gallery owner I must say that we don’t often have normal days, since nonconformity is our mantra. On some days I wade through emails, sending and receiving dozens like anyone else. But on other days we design and implement art programs for offices, stadiums and hospitals–often installing giant works of art in the process–and that is always an adventure. On yet other days I visit the homes of various clients or my staff does. And then on Fridays we often go for bike rides in different parts of the city, always seeking something new or unexpected.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I founded Leopold Gallery in Kansas City in 1991. As an art consultant my clients include Marvel Studios, the Kansas City Chiefs, the City of Boston, the Dallas Arboretum, Miami Freedom Park, H&R Block, and over 10,000 private collectors. Working with a wide range of artists, I design art programs for corporations, hospitals and stadiums. Our projects have won national praise for their innovative approach and impact.
In 2006 I founded the Leopold Gallery Educational Foundation to provide opportunities for teenage artists from impoverished areas of Kansas City. Thus far we’ve guided roughly 900 deserving students into college. I’m also the author of the acclaimed guidebook for artists, Living the Artist’s Life, which took me on a book tour of 50 cities. In 2025 I was selected as Arts Patron of the Year by the State of Kansas and awarded a Ceremonial Proclamation by KCMO.
My wife Annie and I raised our sons in Kansas City, where I was a youth baseball coach. I’ve spent decades roaming America by motorcycle and have lived in Alaska, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Italy, and England. I love surfing, mountain-biking, and alpine hiking—and am a proud Kansas Citian.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
That would be my work as an art consultant, since in the past 34 years we’ve installed massive works all over the country: Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Hartford, Boston, Kansas City… In a few years I’ll be ready to sell the gallery and focus more on philanthropy, since there is so much endless need in the world.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, when my first gallery space caught fire in 1997. We were so broke I had let the insurance lapse for a few months. Needless to say, the fire occurred during that period. However I’m an eternal optimist so after dealing with my depressions and sense of failure, I decided to rebuild and we were able to come back stronger than ever–fortunately.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Laughter, love and adventure–especially in the western deserts and mountains.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Hiking deep into the Grand Canyon with friends. Even better when we chew on a modest amount of mushrooms at sundown–which enhances color, sound and perceptions.
