Natty Redd shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Natty, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
What brings me joy outside of work is definitely spending time with my friends & family (that includes my furry baby)!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Natty Redd and I am a licensed esthetician in Joplin Missouri. I started my skincare clinic, Happy Hour Wax & Facial Bar, 5 years ago. We have grown quite a bit over the last few years. I now have two employees. Hailey, who specializes in brow waxing & brow treatments. Nina, who specializes in facials & then myself who specializes in resurfacing treatments & Brazilian waxing. Nina & Natty are both acne certified specialists through Face Reality and we have been helping guide people to finally clearing their skin for many years now! We also carry a wide variety of skin care products that are all results driven. I also purchased a company called ScrunchBuddy a few years ago. We retail and wholesale the products so that also keeps me busy!
When I think about Happy Hour Wax & Facial Bar and reflect on what clients feedback has been over the years, I realize that we do have something very special. It is something that lacks in A LOT of businesses & that is customer service. Our main focus is our clients. We realize they choose to spend their time & money with us when they have a lot of other businesses similar to ours to choose from and that is not something we over look. In our teams meeting we talk a lot about what we can do or continue to do to make sure our clients always feel appreciated & valued. We know what we offer is top tier & that we are the best at what we do but we don’t every rely on that for our clients to come back. We go above & beyond because if it wasn’t for them choosing to come back to us every time, we wouldn’t have a business. We are just so blessed to have the best clients!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I truly believe the #1 thing that breaks the bond between people is trust. If you give someone a reason not to trust you after you have built a bond then that is very hard to restore but I do believe it is possible with a lot of work on that persons part. The person who has caused the hurt needs to work on themselves & really dig deep. Take accountability and then prove to that friend/partner that you have changed.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear I had that held me back most of my life was the fear of not being accepted. I tried to be like everyone else so they would like me or I would notice who was most liked in the group & try to be more like them. But as I got older, experienced more of life & starting loving who I was, that all changed. I would have never opened my own business bc I would have been scared someone wouldn’t like it or no-one would like it and I would fail. Now I look at fear as something great. If you aren’t scared then you aren’t growing in my opinion. So its okay to have fear but don’t let it control your decisions.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I have actually had multiple clients that have booked (coming in for their first time) and at the end of their appointment they comment on how I am just like I am on my social media posts as I am in person. I guess this comes into play about my fear comment. I no longer try to be someone else, or act a certain way in hopes people will like me. What you get is the real me!
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That it was never about the money. I didn’t start my business to make the most money I could. Don’t get me wrong I love nice things & life is a lot less stressful when you don’t have to worry about money but I wanted to start something that helped people. I think so many people look at this job as a “fun” job or a job thats not hard but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. We do this because we want to help people with their confidence and make sure they know its okay to want to look your best and feel your best but sometimes that takes more than just a facial. It can take months of at home skincare morning and night, resurfacing treatments with downtime & investing financially in YOU!
