Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kelly Lucas of Kansas City, MO

Kelly Lucas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Kelly, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
The biggest thing I feel like I am being called to do now, that I have been afraid of, is opening a large studio. I am a Mom of 5, and was a single Mom for years prior to meeting my husband. My children are the reason I started this journey back up, and as an artist, I want to give my community more. I love creating beautiful art and seeing the joy it brings others. I would love to have a large studio with endless possibilities, but that requires a leap of faith. I believe I am ready for that now.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kelly, and I am the owner and photographer at K. Maurice Photography. I am a full-time registered nurse specializing in critical care, and I continue to care for patients when I’m not photographing others.

My journey as a photographer began in high school when I completely fell in love with art and the process of developing photos in a dark room. During my senior year, I discovered that I was expecting my first child, which became my primary focus as I aimed to provide for her and continue my education. I graduated with my LPN, and after the birth of my third daughter, I decided to book her a newborn photoshoot. However, the cost of that photoshoot was quite high. As a single parent, I struggled to reconcile spending so much, but I knew that capturing those memories of my girls was important to me.

After that experience, I began researching cameras and decided to take pictures of my children myself. Over time, friends and family started asking me to take their photos as well, which led to the birth of K. Maurice Photography.

At K. Maurice Photography, we offer a variety of photo packages, but my absolute favorites are cake smashes and maternity shoots. I am very excited about the future of K. Maurice Photography, and I hope to connect more with my community in a beautiful, welcoming space in the near future.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I have always felt like a delusional princess—until the world and people humbled me. I lost myself for a while, but I was fortunate to meet a group of friends who helped heal me through laughter and love. That same group ultimately led me to my husband. He has been my biggest supporter and the reason K. Maurice Photography is still thriving. He renewed the beauty in my soul and made me feel like a princess again (just this time not delusional lol). So, when I have clients in my studio, I try to give them that same feeling. The world can be tough, but if I can make someone feel special for even just for a moment—I want to do that. We all deserve that.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The biggest fear in life that holds me back is my fear of instability for my family or failure. Being a business owner is scary, so I have held back from fully immersing myself in my business because I have fears of letting my children down. What if it doesn’t work? I have worked so hard to get where I am today, and the fear of losing it all is so heavy that it keeps me from taking big leaps of faith at times.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say yes and no. I am very quiet and shy in large settings and crowds, but if I am with a small group or in an intimate setting, I am super social. When I am with family and friends or I warm up to you, I am a motor mouth lol. So I would say that the public version of me depends on who you ask.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop working so much. I would 100% dedicate that time to my family and my art. I would love to create a photographic series that involves traveling around the world, that I could present in an art gallery.
