Ashley Kukay shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Ashley, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me starts with getting my 3- and 7-year-old ready for school. After a quick coffee and quiet moment, I head to the salon, where I balance seeing 3–6 clients and running the business. I’m grateful for my amazing assistant who helps keep the day running smoothly. Evenings are spent either picking up my girls and cooking dinner or letting my husband take over if I’m working late. As a family, we’re loving Dancing with the Stars right now, and after bedtime stories with the kids, I unwind with a show before calling it a night.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ashley, and I’m the owner of Texture Salon in Olathe, Kansas. I’ve been in the hair industry for over a decade, and I’ve always been passionate about creating a space where every client feels seen, confident, and cared for. Texture was built with the idea that all hair textures are welcome, and we specialize in curly hair while also offering everything from color to extensions and bridal styling.
What makes our salon unique is not just the services we offer, but the atmosphere we’ve created — cozy, elevated, and community-driven. I wanted to build more than a salon; I wanted to build a place where both clients and stylists feel at home and inspired. Right now, I’m focused on growing our team, bringing in talented specialists, and continuing to expand the education side of my brand so we can share knowledge and empower more stylists and clients.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My parents instilled my work ethic from the very beginning. I started working as soon as I was old enough to get a job and never stopped. I’ve always appreciated having my own money and the pride that comes from knowing I’ve earned it. They taught me to work hard, even on the days when I don’t feel my best, but over time I’ve also learned the importance of giving myself grace. One of the ways I recharge is by taking “momcations” — a night or two in a hotel where I completely unplug. Those breaks help refill my cup so I can return with fresh energy for my family, my clients, and my business.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes — I joke that it feels like “every day” at times! Like many entrepreneurs, I often question myself, but then I stop and recognize how far I’ve come and how grateful I am to be where I am today. I never imagined this would be my future, and I’m proud that my journey shows my kids they can do anything they set their minds to.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Family♥️
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I think I’d stop trying to control everything. So much of my life has been about planning, managing, and keeping things together — both at home and in business. If I only had ten years left, I’d want to step out of my head and just fully live, leaning into the things that truly bring me joy. I wouldn’t waste energy on fear or doubt. I’d probably say yes to eating out more, going to concerts, and creating new experiences, but above all, I’d want to spend as much intentional time as possible with my family. Those are the moments that matter most.
