Joey Skidmore shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Joey, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Interesting. So I definitely have a destination–perhaps even a few of them; however, I’m always ready for a number of unforeseen detours along the way, and maybe even a surprise destination that pops up. In other words being a successful entertainer, or filmmaker is not an algorithmic task with clearly defined steps to making it big. It’s a heuristic task, in other words everybody who makes it does it a bit differently. As Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost,” or something like that!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well as you know, I am Joey Skidmore. I’m a musician, best known for a type of Midwestern garage rock and roll. I play with the Nuclear Banana and other bands from time-to-time. For my “brand” I guess you could say it’s Supernova Productions (and Supernova Art Studio), that’s the label that the Nuclear Banana album “Riot on Kansas City Strip” was released on. It’s also the production company for my films, such as “Jim Dandy to the Rescue: a Film by Joey Skidmore,” and “Kiki Meets the Vampires.”
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Powerful? I’m not sure I feel “powerful.” I’m feeling very mortal. However, to answer your question, perhaps the first time I rode a bicycle, or the time when I pushed a big bully away from me, and he fell back over a bench and hit his head on the locker behind him.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
There aren’t very many things that I’m scared of; however, something like cancer I am certainly scared of…BUT it has not really held me back. I do think everybody has to stand up, if they want to continue living in a free society.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. It is a bit of an exaggerated version, but it may not be the full picture.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
Jeez, I’m not sure about some of these questions. Unfortunately, it usually takes lots of wealth to build something important and long-lasting, which I do not have. I just hope my records and my work is remembered, and keeps resurfacing for different generations.
