Today we’d like to introduce you to Youku Tarnue.
Youku, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started The Velvet Standard from a desire to create something that felt bigger than a traditional cleaning service. I’ve always appreciated beautiful, well-kept spaces and the way an organized, thoughtfully cared-for environment can affect how you feel. I wanted to build a company that brought together cleanliness, comfort, presentation, and a higher standard of service.
The idea really began to take shape when I started thinking more seriously about entrepreneurship and the kind of business I wanted to build long-term. I knew I didn’t want to create something that simply focused on completing a checklist. I wanted clients to feel a difference when they walked into their space- that sense of calm, care, and attention to detail that comes from knowing everything has been handled.
That vision became The Velvet Standard. From the beginning, I’ve been intentional about building the brand around professionalism, consistency, hospitality, and elevated home care. I’ve spent a lot of time developing the visual identity, services, client experience, and standards behind the business because I want every part of the company to feel cohesive.
Like Many entrepreneurs, I’m still building and learning as I go. I’ve had to challenge myself to think bigger, become more disciplined, trust my ideas, and stop waiting until everything feels perfect before moving forward. That personal growth has become a big part of the business journey as well.
Today, I’m focused on continuing to grow The Velvet Standard into a trusted home and lifestyle brand that people associate with quality, care, and elevated standards. My long-term vision goes beyond cleaning-I want the brand to represent a certain way of experiencing and caring for your home, and I’m excited to see how that vision continues to evolve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been completely smooth, and honestly, some of the biggest challenges have been internal.
For a long time, I struggled with self-doubt and with questioning whether I was truly capable of building something meaningful. Starting The Velvet Standard forced me to confront parts of myself that were used to playing small, overthinking decisions, and waiting until I felt completely ready. I had to learn that confidence does not always come before action-sometimes it is built because you choose to move forward despite the fear.
There have also been moments when the vision felt much bigger than where I am currently in my journey. That would make me feel so overwhelmed at times. I have had to learn how to give myself permission to build slowly, make mistakes, and change direction when necessary.
Balancing the business with work, personal responsibilities, and my own growth has challenged me in ways I did not expect. There have been times when I felt uncertain, but I kept coming back to the reason I started. I wanted to create something that reflected the standard I was beginning to hold for my own life-something intentional, beautiful, and built with care.
I think that is what this journey has taught me most. Building The Velvet Standard has not only been about building the company; it has been about becoming more confident in my own voice, trusting myself more deeply, and allowing myself to believe that the life and business I envision are actually possible.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Velvet Standard. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Velvet Standard is an elevated home care and lifestyle brand focused on creating clean, refined, and well maintained spaces. While cleaning is at the core of what we do, the experience is about more than simply completing tasks. We focus on the details that make a space feel cared for, comfortable, and intentionally finished.
Our services are designed for clients who value consistency, professionalism, presentation, and peace of mind. That includes residential cleaning, deep clean services, move in/move out services, and turnover care for short-term rental properties. Across each service, the goal is the same: to leave the spaces feeling refreshed, polished, and ready to be enjoyed.
What sets The Velvet Standard apart is our approach to service. We think about the full experience-how the space looks, how it feels when a client walks in, the small finishing touches, and the trust that comes from knowing the work will be handled with care and attention to detail.
I am especially proud of the identity we are building around the brand. From the visual presentation to the client experience, I have been intentional about creating something that feels sophisticated without losing warmth. I want The Velvet Standard to become a name people associate with quality, reliability, and elevated standards of care.
What makes you happy?
What makes me the happiest is feeling at peace with myself and having the freedom to create a life that feels intentional. I enjoy simple things like spending time with people I love, traveling, experiencing new places, meeting new people, listening to music, creating beautiful spaces, and having quiet moments where I can reflect and reset.
I also genuinely enjoy creating. Whether it is bringing an idea to life, styling a space, planning something, or building The Velvet Standard, there is something fulfilling about taking something that exists in my mind and slowly watching it become real.
As i have gotten older, happiness has become more about feeling aligned with who i am and how I want to live. I value peace, meaningful ecperiences, growth, and being able to positively impact the people around me, That sense of purpose is a big of what makes me happy.
