Inspiring Conversations with Vania Gladney of Comic Coffeehouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vania Gladney.

Hi Vania, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Comic Coffeehouse started with two things we have always loved.

Michael’s story started with comic books. He discovered comics as a young kid and quickly fell in love with the characters, artwork, and storytelling. That passion never faded. Today, he has published two original comic stories of his own and enjoys encouraging the next generation of creators and comic fans.

Vania has loved coffee for as long as she can remember. It’s been a daily part of her life since childhood (yes, she was consuming coffee before she started middle school), and every business class project involved the dream of opening a coffee shop in some way.

When we started talking about opening a business together, we kept coming back to the things that brought us joy. We realized we didn’t have to choose between coffee and comics. We could build a place that celebrated both.

From the beginning, our vision was to create more than a coffee shop or a comic store. We wanted to create a welcoming space where people of all ages and backgrounds could feel comfortable being themselves. Whether someone comes in for their morning latte, their first comic book, to play a board game with friends, or to relax in our retro gaming corner, we want them to know they belong here.

That vision has continued to grow. Comic Coffeehouse has become a gathering place for families, students, artists, gamers, and comic fans throughout our community. We are proud to partner with Olathe Public Schools, the Olathe Public Library, and other local organizations to encourage literacy, creativity, and learning. We host cosplay events, creator signings, family activities, and community events that bring people together.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most small businesses, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. We opened knowing there would be challenges, but there were plenty of lessons we didn’t expect and we could only learn by living through them.

One of our biggest challenges has been balancing our vision with the realities of running a small business. We didn’t just want to open another coffee shop. There are plenty of those around. We wanted to create a unique place where people could gather, discover new hobbies, and build lasting friendships. Building that kind of community takes time.

We’ve also had to navigate rising costs across almost every part of the business. The price of coffee, ingredients, supplies, equipment, and inventory has continued to increase, and like many small businesses, we’ve had to make thoughtful decisions about pricing while staying true to our goal of being an affordable place for families and the community. It has challenged us to be creative, operate efficiently, and focus on providing value beyond just the products we sell.

As a family-owned business, we’ve also had to wear a lot of hats. On any given day we’re baristas, buyers, event planners, marketers, accountants, and janitors. There are long days and plenty of moments where we questioned whether we made the right decisions.

Another challenge has been getting exposure. We rely heavily on word of mouth. We don’t have the huge marketing budget of a corporate chain and finding the right, cost-effective advertising channels has been a whole job in itself.

Through it all, the support from our customers and the local community has kept us going. Every family that makes us part of their weekend, every student who finds a quiet place to study, every gamer who makes a new friend, and every child who discovers their first comic reminds us why we started Comic Coffeehouse in the first place. Those moments make all of the hard work worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Comic Coffeehouse?
Comic Coffeehouse is built around a simple idea: great coffee and great stories bring people together.

We are a family-owned coffee shop and community gathering space in Olathe that blends specialty coffee with comic books and pop culture. While people often discover us because they’re looking for a latte or a new comic, what keeps them coming back is our unique concept and comfortable atmosphere (and the best latte in KC!).

One of the things that sets us apart is that we don’t believe you have to fit a certain stereotype to enjoy comics. We welcome lifelong collectors, families, kids, and people picking up their very first comic book. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable exploring a new interest without feeling intimidated.

We’re especially proud of our commitment to supporting independent creators. We actively feature and sell comics from independent writers and artists, including local creators, and we’re continuing to grow into an indie comics hub. We believe some of the best stories haven’t been discovered yet, and we’re excited to help introduce those creators to new readers.

While coffee and comics are the center of what we do today, we’re also excited about where we’re headed. Over the next year, we’ll be expanding our offerings to include trading card games, role-playing games, board games, miniatures, and other hobby products. Our vision is to become a destination to discover new interests, connect with others, and build community around the hobbies you love.

If there’s one thing we’d want readers to know about Comic Coffeehouse, it’s that we’re more than a coffee shop and more than a comic store. We’re a place where conversations begin over coffee, imaginations are sparked through stories, and strangers become friends. That mission is captured in the three words that guide everything we do: Coffee. Comics. Community.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The easiest way to support Comic Coffeehouse is just to stop by. Grab a cup of coffee, try one of our specialty drinks, pick up a comic, or bring a friend who hasn’t visited before. Every purchase helps us continue building the community.

Independent creators are a big part of who we are. If you’re a comic writer, artist, or publisher, we’d love to connect. We proudly support indie creators through consignment opportunities and creator events, because we believe local talent deserves a place to be discovered.

One of the best ways people can support us doesn’t cost anything. Follow us on social media, share our posts, leave a review, recommend us to a friend, or bring someone with you on your next visit. Small businesses grow because people tell their friends about places they love, and we’re incredibly grateful every time someone does.
