Inspiring Conversations with Theresa Jones of Plaza Heights Christian Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Jones.

Theresa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Plaza Heights Christian Academy was born out of the desire for students to have a safe place to learn, to feel loved, and to develop a relationship with Christ rooted in Biblical truth.

Gina was a parent seeking this type of school in 1997, and when her family didn’t find this option locally, they began to consider what it would take to create a school that met these needs. They attended Plaza Heights Baptist Church at the time, and they reached out to their pastor with the idea. After years of prayer and planning, Plaza Heights Christian Academy opened it’s doors in 1999 as a preschool – 6th grade school with 86 students.

Twenty six years later PHCA is now a fully accredited preschool – 12th grade with over 330 students in attendance. We offer full fledged athletics and fine arts programs and prepare students for whatever path they choose to follow post graduation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been completely smooth sailing, but the challenges we’ve faced have been good ones—mostly tied to growth. In recent years, we’ve expanded our facilities and made room for more students, which has brought exciting opportunities and a few growing pains along the way. Each step of that process has strengthened our team, improved our systems, and reminded us why we do what we do—to serve more families with excellence.

As you know, we’re big fans of Plaza Heights Christian Academy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Plaza Heights Christian Academy is a Christ-centered, mission-driven school committed to the discipleship and development of the whole child. We intentionally build relational connections so every student is known, loved, and equipped to grow academically and spiritually.

Through a Biblical worldview, we prepare students for college, career, and the callings God has for their lives. What sets us apart is our authentically Christian approach to education—integrating faith and learning to help students know Christ, follow Him, and impact the world for His glory.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best part of Kansas City is the hometown feel. There is a general sense of kindness in everyone you meet, and it’s easy to make connections over your favorite local barbecue or our incredible Chiefs and Royals teams!
