Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenesia Brown
Hi Tenesia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a real estate broker for 20 years and I started as a home based realtor and in 2017 I knew the community needed me. That year KC had lots or murders and talk about gentrification, so I decided to open an office and moved to the urban core. 2018 I started a bi-annual event called the Kansas City Urban Core Homes Show and Bus Tour in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act . An event to bring all the resources to one location to help people overcome the barriers that were preventing them from becoming homeowners ( mostly underserved people Black and Brown) we’ve done that tour twice a year since. It’s helped us on our mission to create 1,000 new black and brown homeowners. But I wanted to do more and be more accessible after seeing a few participants who’d been coming to the tour since it first started and realizing they still hadn’t taken the steps to reach their goal of homeownership… I asked them why? They said they are fired up at the events but then the go on with life! So October 20, 2023 I opened a Kansas Cities first First Time Homebuyers Headquarters located at 5737 Swope Parkway KCMO where you can come 365 days a year to get resources through my non profit By Purpose Productions and Keys Realty Group Inc. also moved our office inside of it too. We have on site lenders, various non profit partners to offer services to the community and was recently grant awardee of the Housing Trust Fund for a grant to help people improve their credit, educate on homeownership and issue $5,000 non repayable grants for down payment on a new house. The grant is called the KC Urban Core Homeownership Fund Grant. We hope to help put 75 people into homes with the grant.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Rocky roads make the journey interesting I suppose. There are always obstacles and hurdles to overcome … from gaining the trust of the community, making sure your able to provide them with valuable resources and most recently my husband transitioning May 2, 2024. When you’re facing your own struggles and battles it makes it difficult to help others most times. But it was the total opposite for me… after thinking I just wanted to give up everything because my world had just been shattered into 1,000 pieces I realized if I stopped fighting for homeownership for ALL would people ever have the opportunity to become homeowners? So knowing I’m actually helping people make a difference in their lives gave me the Will to get back on the saddle. So this past summer I created a Real Estate Round Up series and ended it with a Homeownership Hoedown. Between the tours and our Summer series we have helped 773 people become homeowners and I thank the community to HELPING recognize I am needed.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
KRG is a community real estate brokerage that focuses on homeownership for all. All of our agents are passionate, caring and very knowledgeable. We are known for getting “It Done” if you call us and want to buy a home or sell a house we are getting you to the finish line. I think we are different from most brokerages because we work with ALL people in ALL price points and we bring an enthusiasm, passion and a level of education that most brokerages don’t. When people see the KRG logo and brand they know there is HOPE for whatever it is they want to do. I want readers to know we work with everyone we have a mission but that mission is for ALL people and races to become homeowners and we will treat you all like family.
BPP is a nonprofit who’s mission is to provide financial and homeownership education to underserved communities. It’s also the organization behind all the fun and amazing financial, credit and homeownership events in Kansas City: KC Urban Core Homes Show and Bus Tour, Real Estate Round Up, Homeownership Hoedown, School Supply Drives and The First Time Homebuyers Headquarters.
We are a little different from most because we have an unorthodox realistic approach to education the community. I’d like people to know that we are always looking to partner with organizations to provide the community with services to help them live better lives and we welcome donations to assist us help more families and people become more financially educated and stable through homeownership.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We’ve had a major shifts in real estate lately .. so over the next years we will less agents and more service and value being added to the industry .
