Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamicka Monson.
Hi Tamicka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Tamicka Monson, a licensed clinical professional counselor and the founder of a private practice I’ve been growing for nearly four years. Before becoming a therapist, I spent over 15 years working in schools and behavioral health settings supporting youth, families, and adults. I was always drawn to people who were struggling, and I became a therapist because I want to help people heal, grow, and become the best version of themselves.
Healing has been part of my story for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used writing as a way to survive and make sense of the world. That same passion carried into adulthood, when I returned to school to earn my second master’s degree and become a therapist. Today, I bring that lived experience into my work, helping others turn their pain into purpose and possibility.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many small business owners, especially in mental health, I’ve had to learn how to pivot and build in ways that actually work for my community. I’ve faced challenges with insurance companies, delayed and denied reimbursements, and policies that make it harder for therapists to serve people who need care the most. I also see financial barriers on the client side, where people want support but can’t always afford consistent therapy or have plans that limit their access. On top of that, being a Black woman–owned practice in a healthcare system that wasn’t designed with us in mind adds extra layers of navigation and advocacy. Despite all of that, I keep finding ways to innovate so my clients don’t fall through the cracks.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tamicka Monson Counseling LLC?
Tamicka Monson Counseling LLC is a trauma-informed mental health practice and social-impact brand focused on helping people heal, grow, and thrive. It is especially for those who have been historically underserved by the mental health system. I provide therapy, training, and public education that centers on emotional wellness, identity, and social justice.
What I’m most known for is my work in trauma recovery, particularly racial trauma, complex trauma, sexual trauma, and the mental health needs of Black women, youth, and marginalized communities. I also specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD and executive functioning, grief, identity development, and youth mental health. My work is queer-affirming, culturally responsive, and rooted in real-world understanding, not just theory.
What truly sets my brand apart is that I combine clinical expertise with lived experience and advocacy. I don’t believe healing happens in a vacuum; systems, racism, access to care, and identity all matter. My approach meets people where they are and helps them not only cope but reclaim their power. I use evidence-based practices, play therapy techniques, and strengths-based approaches that are especially effective for youth and adults who haven’t always felt safe or seen.
Beyond therapy, I offer trainings, workshops, speaking engagements, and written resources on mental health, social justice, and emotional wellness. I’m also the author of “Where Daddy Lives” (a book about kids of incarcerated parents) and the creator of programming focused on supporting children of incarcerated parents and families navigating trauma.
I’m most proud that my work is authentic, community-rooted, and impact-driven. My brand stands for healing that is honest, inclusive, and culturally grounded. I want others to know that when they engage with my work, whether through therapy, a workshop, or a book, they’re not just getting services; they’re getting a space built on dignity, equity, and the belief that everyone deserves to feel whole.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that surprises a lot of people is that I’m also a rapper and musician. Music has always been one of my first tools for healing, long before I became a therapist. I actually weave music into my work. I may quote lyrics in sessions to help a client feel understood, or incorporate songs into my speaking engagements to make mental health conversations more relatable and human. It’s one of the ways I bridge clinical work with culture and creativity.
