Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Olson.
Hi Stephanie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Adulting Financial about seven years ago to help people feel less overwhelmed by their money. I kept meeting smart, capable adults who felt embarrassed or intimidated by finances because they were never actually taught how things like budgeting, investing, or taxes work.
My work began with personal finance, helping individuals and families create budgets, build emergency funds, and gain confidence in managing their own finances.
Over time, many of my clients turned out to be entrepreneurs or small business owners, and their questions expanded to include bookkeeping, taxes, and how to actually run the financial side of a business. That’s when my husband, who specializes in accounting and taxes, and I started working together more closely.
Today, we combine those strengths to help both individuals and small businesses with personal finance, tax preparation, and ongoing accounting support. Our mission remains the same: to make finances understandable and approachable, not overwhelming.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. One of the biggest early challenges was creating something that didn’t resemble a traditional financial firm. The finance world can seem very formal and intimidating, and I intentionally aimed to do the opposite.
Another challenge is that money can be a highly emotional topic. Many people feel embarrassed discussing it, so building trust takes time. But honestly, that’s also become the most rewarding part of the work. Leaving *almost* every meeting laughing and excited for the next one is the top goal, especially for those who start meetings stressed or overwhelmed.
Most of my growth has come through word of mouth from clients who appreciate having someone explain things in a way that makes sense. That is the biggest compliment I can receive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Adulting Financial is really about helping people feel less overwhelmed by money. A lot of people assume everyone else has this stuff figured out, but the truth is, most of us weren’t taught how budgeting, investing, taxes, or business finances work.
I started by working one-on-one with individuals and families on personal finance, things like building a budget, creating an emergency fund, and learning how to invest so they don’t have to rely on a financial advisor forever.
Over time, many of my clients started businesses, which naturally opened the door to a whole new set of questions about bookkeeping, taxes, payroll, and understanding the financial side of running a business. Because of that, the business has expanded to include tax preparation and small business accounting services as well.
What I believe truly sets us apart is that we don’t just hand someone a spreadsheet or a tax return and send them on their way. A big part of our work is helping people genuinely understand what’s happening with their money so they can make smarter decisions and feel more confident about it, empowering them to take control of their finances.
Any big plans?
Right now, we’re really focused on continuing to grow the tax and accounting side of the business alongside the personal finance work. There’s a real need for tax support that’s both technically sound and easy to understand.
Helping a business owner go from feeling overwhelmed by their finances to feeling completely in control is incredibly satisfying. Oddly, this seems to be the opposite of how most of the industry operates.
