Inspiring Conversations with Staci Hubbard of KC Book Beat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Staci Hubbard

Hi Staci, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For many indie authors, writing the book is the easy part. Getting it into readers’ hands? That is where the real struggle begins.

When we met local authors, the same frustrations came up again and again. Publishing feels isolating, the business side is overwhelming, and finding affordable ways to reach readers is a challenge. With no clear roadmap, many authors are left to figure it out alone.

That is why we started KC Book Beat.

KC Book Beat exists to change the way authors connect with readers, small businesses, and each other. We believe that when we lift each other up, we all rise. By working together and relying on community, we can make a bigger impact for everyone in the Kansas City literary scene.

Instead of making authors navigate this journey alone, we create real opportunities for visibility and growth. Whether it is through our catalog, events, or workshops, we make sure indie authors have affordable and meaningful ways to get their books in front of readers.

We have seen firsthand how much stronger the literary community becomes when authors have support.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges has been shifting the idea of competition. Some people see us as competitors in the industry, but we believe success is not about fighting for a limited number of opportunities. When we collaborate, we create more.

Our goal is to build a literary community where authors, bookstores, and businesses support each other instead of competing for space. The more we work together, the more we all grow. Readers discover new voices, authors reach more people, and businesses connect with engaged audiences. A thriving book community benefits everyone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
A strong literary community does not happen by accident. It takes connection, collaboration, and opportunities that lift everyone up. That is what KC Book Beat is built to do.

Writing a book is just the beginning. The real challenge is getting it into the hands of readers. That is where KC Book Beat steps in. We publish a biannual catalog that highlights local authors and businesses, making it easier for readers to discover incredible books from their own community. Our flagship event, Lit & Libations, brings together authors and book lovers in a fun and engaging setting, while our workshops and networking opportunities give writers the tools they need to grow.

Beyond events and publications, we work to make the literary industry more accessible. We partner with small businesses in creative ways, from hosting author events in local cafés to collaborating with shops that carry books by independent writers. These partnerships help authors reach new audiences while strengthening the local economy. Our focus is on community over competition, ensuring that authors do not have to navigate this journey alone.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The publishing industry is changing, and indie authors are in a better position than ever before. Traditional publishing is no longer the only path to success. With the right tools, indie authors can build their own audiences, market their books effectively, and create sustainable careers.

That being said, the challenges are real. The market is crowded, algorithms shift constantly, and authors are expected to do more than just write. Marketing, branding, and business strategy are all part of the job now. That is why community support is so important. When authors work together, share resources, and lift each other up, success becomes more achievable.
