Today we’d like to introduce you to Porshia Mitchell.
Hi Porshia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In height of the pandemic, I got to thinking about what more do I want out of life. I really had time to sit back and dream. I wanted to take up space in this world. Although, we were in a time of the unknown of what would happen in the future, I knew at some point things would turn around. That time of not being able to be around people, really showed me just how much I love to gather with others and how important it is to celebrate life in every facet. Being an only child, I have constantly found myself being around those who come from a large immediate family and it brings me joy to be apart of that. I also am a planner and love to put events, gatherings, trips, etc. together. Seeing people connect and have a good time is a happy place for me. I came to see that having an event space allowed me to have a place where people can create memories and solidify relationships. I stumbled upon this space as it just so happens to be right next to my childhood dentist office and I grew up just a few minutes away from the building. My parents still go to this dentist office and this is how I found out about it. Every single thing from seeing the space, to obtaining it, transforming it, to it to becoming Cocoa Spaces was aligned so perfectly. Everything fell in place and I know it was all God’s doing. Today, Cocoa Spaces has officially been open 3 years and I’ve seen so much growth, community and connections from owning it. I absolutely love having a space to spotlight small businesses, celebrate milestones and build relationships!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has had its challenges. Being in the event industry has its peak times and slow times. Especially, when the weather is not favorable. Also, operating a small business, when you wear many hats means you are pulled in a lot of different directions and it can be a lot. I am so grateful to those who have volunteered their time to help me when I need it. My retired parents have also dedicated their time to build, open doors and many other things.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cocoa Spaces is a micro event space and was also one of the first in the KC area. We offer a space for up to 50 people for many different things such as celebrations, photo shoots, meeting space, dinner parties, content creation, etc. Micro event spaces are important because it allows more intimate and curated events for very intentional guest lists. We want you to really connect with everyone in the room and not making it an overwhelming amount of space. I am most proud of Cocoa Spaces for being a family run business that cares about those who utilize the space for their personal events. I want readers to know when someone rents Cocoa Spaces that it means a lot to me that I get to connect with those who use the space and that each customer to know how much I care that they have a great event. Making sure things run smoothly and that their day is stress free is most important. Cocoa Spaces is also a community space too and not just for birthdays, baby showers, etc. We offer a space for business meetings, we have churches that trust our space, we also allow for small business pop ups if you sell products and services. We are flexible in our offerings as we want you to curate your ideas and bring them to life!
Any big plans?
In the future, I would love for Cocoa Spaces to have other locations. Also, I want to curate different specialized event ideas. I have done a few events of my own and want to offer more things that allow networking and connections with local business owners.
