Inspiring Conversations with Nicole Fox of Mama and Me Children’s Boutique

Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, I’m Nicole & I am the founder of the Mama and Me Children’s Boutique in the heart of Liberty, Missouri – nestled just north of Kansas City, Missouri! People often wonder why I started this boutique – and the answer is simple. “Community.” Motherhood is hard and, at times, can feel incredibly isolating. Being able to surround ourselves with other Moms and trying to navigate parenting is key to our survival but aids in ensuring our children thrive. This little boutique will become a haven for mothers to share in the wild ride. I want Mama & Me to be where mothers from all walks and paths can connect and find their tribe. Those moms can see that they don’t have to do this alone; others are out there hoping to find someone like them. When I first launched Mama & Me, it started my home two months after I had my sweet daughter, Ryan. Looking back, I can confidently say I was knee-deep in postpartum depression, barely showering and unable to recognize my new body or self. My home was full of boxes, but my heart was bursting with love and hope. Almost four years later, Ryan and Mama & Me look entirely different. Located in the most significant retail space on the Historic Downtown Liberty Square – packed to the brim with high-quality mother and child products plus two event spaces, I have never felt more passionate about moms banning together to support one another.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There likely isn’t anything “smooth” about entrepreneurialism, but opening a brick-and-mortar boutique in June of 2020, just months after the world shut down, was anything but “smooth.” I signed the lease to bring Mama & Me to life in Downtown Liberty in March 2020, just days before the world shuts down. We opened our doors to the public, with a covid capacity of 9 customers, just a few months later. The ability to receive inventory was in constant flux, and navigating covid policy felt like a full-time job responsibly. But never before had motherhood felt so isolating to so many, fueling me to continue and further empowering the Mama & Me mission of building community.

We’ve been impressed with Mama and Me Children’s Boutique, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Mama and Me Children’s Boutique is a carefully curated collection of everything that makes you you, your style, your attitude, your elegance, everything you’ve spent a lifetime discovering and honing. It doesn’t have to disappear when you become a mom. But all too often, those things fade behind a whirlwind of primary colors and cartoon critters, and “who you are” becomes “who you used to be.” Well. Not anymore. Mama and Me are here to celebrate what makes you unique. To provide a fresh perspective on what motherhood can look like. And to make sure you always feel like you. A carefully curated collection of children’s clothing, toys, books, and gifts for moms and expecting moms, Mama, and Me Children’s Boutique is located just north of Kansas City in Historic Downtown Liberty. Our boutique also offers two beautiful event spaces, perfect for small to mid-size functions such as birthday parties, baby showers, and bridal showers.
