Today we’d like to introduce you to Musudeen Harrell.
Hi Musudeen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in the in-home care arena in 2004. At the time, I was working as a nurse on the night shift, and I began to see a need that deeply impacted me. I saw individuals going into nursing homes simply because they did not have the care and support, they needed at home.
That experience opened my eyes to a greater need.
I began to ask myself, what if people could receive the care they needed in the comfort of their own homes?
That is when I had a vision. I believe God allowed me to see an opportunity to serve individuals and families in a different way. From that vision, I began my journey into in-home care and started my first in-home care agency with a business partner.
Eventually, I branched out and started an agency in 2016. Our focus was caring for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities and helping them remain as independent as possible in their own homes.
Our services included housekeeping, meal preparation, personal care, and medication management. We were not simply providing a service; we were becoming part of people’s lives and helping families care for their loved ones.
In 2019, another opportunity opened. I acquired a contract to provide services to individuals with intellectual disabilities who required around-the-clock care, twenty-four hours a day.
As the need continued to grow, so did the vision.
We eventually expanded our services to include an adult day program in Lee’s Summit, where individuals can participate in activities, develop skills, build relationships, and receive support in a structured environment.
Looking back, I can see that what began with one nurse working a night shift and noticing a need became much more than a business. It became a calling to serve individuals and families who needed someone willing to step in, advocate for them, and help them navigate the challenges of caregiving.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Providing in-home care comes with challenges that many families may never see from the outside. Through my experience, I have seen individuals whose services were funded through Medicaid but whose authorized hours did not always provide all of the support they needed to remain safely in their homes.
This can be especially difficult for individuals who are bed-bound or require significant assistance throughout the day.
Over the years, I have also witnessed changes in the number of service hours available to some of the individuals we serve. Changes in budgets and service authorizations can have a very real impact on individuals and their families. When the hours of care are reduced, families can suddenly find themselves trying to fill the gap.
There is another side of this challenge as well: finding caregivers.
Many caregivers need and want to work more than just two or three hours a day. When an individual’s authorized hours are limited, however, it can be difficult to build a consistent schedule that provides enough work for a caregiver while also meeting the individual’s care needs.
That creates a difficult cycle.
The individual needs more support. The family needs more help. The caregiver needs enough hours to make the work sustainable. And the provider is left trying to balance all of those needs within the hours and resources that are available.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Courageous Home Care is a home and community-based care organization dedicated to supporting individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities while helping them remain safely and as independently as possible in their own homes. Our journey began from a vision I received while working as a nurse on the night shift in 2004. I saw individuals entering nursing homes simply because they did not have enough support available at home. That experience inspired me to create a different option for individuals and families.
Today, our services include in-home support such as personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation, medication management, and other assistance designed to help individuals remain in their homes and participate in their communities. We also provide services for individuals who require more extensive, around-the-clock support and operate an adult day program in Lee’s Summit.
We specialize in caring for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities and supporting families who are navigating the challenges of long-term caregiving. We are known for providing hands-on, compassionate care while recognizing that every individual has different needs.
Our experience as a provider has also given us firsthand knowledge of the challenges families face when trying to understand available services, authorized hours, caregivers, and payment systems. We understand that having coverage does not always mean a family has enough hours or resources to meet every need.
What sets Courageous Home Care apart is our commitment to seeing the person—not simply the diagnosis or the service authorization.
Our nursing and caregiving background allows us to understand both the clinical and personal sides of care. We believe individuals deserve dignity, respect, compassion, and the opportunity to remain connected to their homes and communities whenever possible.
We also believe in advocacy. When an individual or family is navigating a complicated care system, they need someone who is willing to listen, ask questions, communicate with others involved in their care, and help make sure their needs are not overlooked.
We are most proud that the name Courageous Home Care represents the courage it takes for families to ask for help and the courage it takes for caregivers to serve others every day.
Our brand represents compassion, advocacy, dignity, and commitment. We are proud of the relationships we have developed with the individuals and families we serve and of the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.
We want readers to know that caregiving is not simply about having someone come into the home and provide a service. It is about understanding the individual, supporting the family, navigating available resources, and creating a plan that helps the person live as safely and independently as possible.
We also want families to know that they do not have to navigate caregiving alone. There are resources, services, and people who can help. Sometimes the most important first step is simply knowing what questions to ask and where to begin.
Courageous Home Care was built from a desire to meet a need I saw firsthand as a nurse. What began as a vision has grown into an organization committed to serving individuals with disabilities, supporting families, and advocating for people who may not always have a voice.
Our goal is simple: to provide compassionate care, empower families, and help individuals live with dignity in the place they call home.
What’s next?
I am planning to expand this service business into other states helping the intellectual development individuals. Also speaking to college students and staff on leadership and personal development. Speaking to nursing homes on senior advocacy and resources.
