Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Vecchi.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello! I’m Morgan, the owner of Buttercup Cottage Bakery, LLC.
My journey with Buttercup Cottage Bakery began during a season of recovery. In September 2025, I was recovering from reconstructive hip surgery and found myself needing both a creative outlet and a sense of purpose during that time. Baking had always been a part of my life—my grandmother spent years in the kitchen, and I grew up watching her create incredible things from scratch. That early exposure stayed with me, even though I hadn’t yet turned it into something of my own.
During my recovery, I taught myself how to make sourdough. It was a process filled with trial and error, but I was drawn to the discipline, patience, and complexity of it. What started as learning quickly turned into a passion, and I began refining my recipes and techniques day by day.
I sold my first products at a simple garage sale, which gave me an early glimpse into the excitement and demand for handcrafted sourdough products. From there, I set up a small pickup table on my front porch and began offering made-to-order items to my local community. As interest grew, I expanded into local events, pop-ups, farmers markets, and community partnerships, continuing to build both my menu and my customer base.
On October 1, 2025, I officially launched Buttercup Cottage Bakery. Since then, the bakery has grown from a small home-based operation into a thriving artisan bakery serving customers throughout St. Joseph and the surrounding communities through weekly bake drops, events, and multiple pickup locations.
What started during a challenging season of my life has become something truly meaningful. Buttercup Cottage Bakery has been built through persistence, continuous learning, community support, and a genuine passion for the craft of sourdough baking. I’m incredibly grateful for every customer who has supported the bakery along the way and helped turn a difficult chapter into something so rewarding.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I started Buttercup Cottage Bakery during a time when I was recovering from hip surgery, which was both physically and mentally challenging. There were days when I was still in pain, limited in what I could do, and trying to navigate what recovery would look like long-term. Starting a business in that season wasn’t easy, but it gave me something to focus on and rebuild around.
Learning sourdough itself was another challenge. It’s not something you master quickly, and there was a lot of trial and error in the beginning. There were failed loaves, long nights, and moments of questioning whether I could really turn it into something consistent and reliable. At the same time, I was trying to figure out how to turn what I was creating into a business—how to price products, manage orders, and show up for customers in a professional way.
As the bakery began to grow, the challenges shifted. What started as something small and manageable quickly became something that required structure, systems, and a much higher level of responsibility. Balancing production, demand, and quality—while still taking care of myself physically—wasn’t always easy. There were moments of exhaustion and uncertainty, especially in the early stages of growth.
But those experiences shaped the foundation of what Buttercup Cottage Bakery is today. The challenges forced me to slow down, learn patience, and build the business with intention. It wasn’t perfect, and it wasn’t always easy, but it was meaningful—and it’s something I’ve grown into just as much as I’ve grown the business itself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Buttercup Cottage Bakery, LLC?
Buttercup Cottage Bakery is a small-batch artisan sourdough bakery specializing in naturally fermented breads, New York-style sourdough bagels, and handcrafted baked goods. Every product is made from scratch using traditional fermentation methods, quality ingredients, and the belief that great baking takes time.
What sets the bakery apart is the level of care and intention behind every item. Sourdough is not a quick process—it requires patience, planning, and consistency. Rather than focusing on mass production, I focus on creating products that are thoughtfully crafted and prepared in small batches. That commitment to quality is at the heart of everything we do.
While sourdough bread is the foundation of the bakery, we’ve become known for a wide variety of unique offerings, including specialty sourdough loaves, New York-style sourdough bagels, seasonal baked goods, and creative flavor combinations that keep customers excited to see what’s coming next. Through our weekly bake drops, customers can enjoy both dependable favorites and limited seasonal offerings throughout the year.
From a brand perspective, I’m most proud of the community that has formed around the bakery. What began as a small home-based operation has grown through word-of-mouth, local events, farmers markets, and the incredible support of customers throughout St. Joseph and the surrounding communities. That support has allowed Buttercup Cottage Bakery to grow while staying true to the values that built it—quality, consistency, and genuine connection.
More than anything, I want readers to know that Buttercup Cottage Bakery is about craftsmanship, tradition, and bringing people together through great food. Whether it’s a weekly loaf of sourdough, a favorite bagel flavor, or a special treat shared with family and friends, every product is made with the hope of becoming part of someone’s table and creating a memorable experience.
How do you define success?
For me, success is defined by building something that is both sustainable and meaningful over the long term. With Buttercup Cottage Bakery, it’s not just about growth in volume or revenue—it’s about maintaining the integrity of the product and the process as the business continues to evolve.
There’s a balance I’m always working toward: scaling in a way that supports demand while still preserving the quality, consistency, and craftsmanship that the bakery was built on. If I can continue to grow without compromising those core values, that’s success to me.
On a personal level, success also means creating something that I’m proud of—something that reflects the discipline, effort, and intention that went into building it. Knowing that customers trust the product, return consistently, and value what I’m creating is a very real measure of success.
At the same time, success is having the ability to keep moving forward—refining systems, improving processes, and building a business that is stable and sustainable long-term. It’s less about a single milestone and more about continuing to grow in a way that is intentional and aligned with the vision behind Buttercup Cottage Bakery.
