Inspiring Conversations with Mikaila Martinez of Palomai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikaila Martinez.

Hi Mikaila, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my small business, Palomai, as a passion project, but it quickly became so much more. It grew into a brand centered on confidence, positive self-talk, and helping estheticians and beauty professionals feel amazing in their own skin. Over the past two years, running Palomai has taught me marketing, brand strategy, customer experience, and what it truly means to build something from the ground up.

I’ve done everything from designing products and managing ambassadors to building partnerships, running all the marketing, and even supporting other small businesses through print-on-demand services. Through all of that, I learned how to create not just the visuals of a brand, but the voice, the strategy, the community, and the story behind it.

Palomai is where I discovered how much I love connecting with people, creating uplifting experiences, and empowering others through beauty, wellness, and mindset. And even though I’m currently in a corporate role, my long-term dream is to continue growing Palomai into something bigger — a brand that truly makes an impact. It’s where my creativity comes alive, it’s where I feel the most myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’m really grateful for everything it’s taught me. One of the biggest challenges has been building Palomai while working a full-time corporate job. I had to learn how to manage my time, stay organized, and keep showing up for my brand even when I was tired or overwhelmed.

But those challenges pushed me to grow in ways I never expected. They helped me trust my vision, believing in myself, and stay grounded in why I started. Every obstacle has made me a stronger creator and a more confident business owner. So no, it hasn’t been smooth but the tough parts have made the journey meaningful.

Another part that was difficult was the loneliness that naturally comes with being a business owner. Even though I’ve had amazing people in my corner — like mentors, coaches, and my supplier who has supported me so much — there’s still this internal journey you go through when you’re chasing big dreams. You’re the one who has to make the decisions, believe in the vision, and keep going even when no one sees the behind-the-scenes work. That part can feel isolating at times.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Palomai?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that Kansas City is full of surprises — incredible restaurants, cool neighborhoods, and a really supportive community. Least favorite? Let’s just say our roads are a little… character-building. Between the potholes and the never-ending construction, it definitely keeps things interesting but hey, that just means we’re growing, right?
