Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Thurman.
Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first picked up my clippers while serving in the Army. 22 years ago. I attended barber school years later in 2009 and took the craft on full time. I have owned three separate barbershops in two different cities. But I feel at home here in Kansas City.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an interesting road. I was actually fired from the first shop I worked at, told I knew nothing about cutting hair and should find other work. (That was motivating)
But I feel that life is not meant to be easy, so obstacles and challenges are necessary and important to build confidence in your field.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Joseph Barberman?
Joseph Barebrman is a brand and not a brick and mortar business. I have created an online presence for fans of my work and career can follow me, contact me or book me for haircuts. There is a website to connect with me and buy Joseph Barberman merchandise.
I want to create the type of brand that encompasses my life, my art and gives the best interpretation of an entrepreneur in Kansas City. There is an amazing feeling Kansas City gives me. The energy as an entrepreneur here in Kansas City is like a physical high. I want my brand to interpret that feeling.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Creativity is very important for my success. The ability to always change my approach to business and art. Finding fresh new ways to connect the two worlds and present that works to my followers.
Being inclusive is necessary for success in any part of our lives today. Having the spirit of sharing and equality is the most important approach while dealing with people in general. Our world today has had their limit of prejudice.
Being genuine at all levels will make or break your success. Nothing else matters if you’re not being genuine, regardless of how many people do not see it your way, you must hold to your truths.
