Inspiring Conversations with Kwaku Duah of Six5ive Media & Global Waves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kwaku Duah.

Hi Kwaku, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is Kwaku, also known as DJ Six5ive. I’m a DJ, entertainer, and entrepreneur.

My journey started back in ‘95 in Queens, NY. I was born to immigrant parents from Ghana and had a great childhood.

My upbringing was mostly sports and talking too much in class (proud socialite over here).

After my collegiate basketball career ended due to injury, I was introduced to music by my best friend, Rashaan. He took me to the studio with him one day and that’s where it all began.

Shortly after, I was DJing, playing the guitar, and playing the piano. I dove in headfirst with music. I told myself, sports didn’t work out so I gotta be great at something else – no matter what. I’m glad I stuck with it.

Three years later, I took my music journey overseas to Ghana and hosted a charity party for Save Them Young Orphanage. It wasn’t too far from where my parents grew up. Seeing those kids dance and chant “DJ Six5ive” was the moment I knew that this is what I was born to do.

Fast forward three more years and now I’m doing my thing in Miami Beach. I give all glory to God, my support system, and my resiliency because without these things, there’s no way I’d be where I am now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey definitely hasn’t been a smooth sail, haha. I don’t believe any earned success is. I’ve battled internal challenges for many years. My biggest struggle started when I had my first ACL injury. I was just starting to take off and then boom. My season was done. I had the other injury when I was in college and this one really cut me deep. A lot of self-doubt and poor mental health came into play at this time. I dug myself out of a dark place with the support of my girlfriend at the time and my love for music. I began creating nonstop and all I could see was the bright future ahead of me. I’m grateful to have overcome all that I have.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Six5ive Media & Global Waves?
Six5ive Media encompasses my work as an artist. So anything from DJing to releasing music to acting. I started my own LLC in 2018 and haven’t really looked back since.

Global Waves is a nonprofit organization that hosts events for child-based charities around the world. We raise money by throwing dope events and playing great music. It’s amazing to see the community get behind you and support a great cause.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Purpose. Purpose has undoubtedly been the cornerstone of my success. My purpose drives me and will continue to drive me because this journey and all that I do is bigger than me. My purpose is to leave my handprint on this earth in the best way possible.
