Inspiring Conversations with Kristy Bodenhamer of The Inspection Boys KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Bodenhamer.

Kristy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to be a creator, and I knew I wanted to own my own business someday. After college, I ended up working as an Engineer and, eventually, a Project Manager in the construction industry here in Kansas City for many years. Being a strong female in a male-dominated industry has never been easy, but I’ve always enjoyed being able to contradict any stereotypes, and show people that I’m not only capable, but great at what I set my mind to. Just prior to the pandemic I really began my research on what sort of business I wanted to own that I could also provide a new perspective in as a female, and even bring some innovation to. I quickly began going back to my roots of construction within the city.

Eventually, my partner, Andy Holmes, and myself knew that The Inspection Boys franchise out of the east coast was exactly the perfect fit for us! They were a relatively new franchise, and they truly have that family feel to them. Spoiler alert; they also have a female owner which can be somewhat ironic with our company name. Their support in onboarding our team, training, and getting things started was nothing short of spectacular. Now I had to let my friends and family know what we were starting. I had no idea how much excitement it began to generate that we were going to launch a home inspection business soon!

Anyone who knows us knows that we are both perfectionists so if we put our name on something it has to be great. The entire point of starting this business was to be first class in customer service, integrity, and also to have heart! I want to be a great leader, and not just a boss to my staff. I also want them to be able to set their work/life balance. This easily transpired into my overall mission… “Dream big. Work hard. Have fun. Give back.” Let’s do something great together, have fun along the way, and then really give back to our community in a major way. We’re now at the precipice of launching, and the excitement continues to grow. I can’t wait to share our story, and also bring a truly great experience to future home-buyers that they can trust us with one of their biggest life decisions. We look forward to being a great company, employer, and community partner to Kansas City!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obviously, our plan began in 2019 and was definitely halted with the unexpected pandemic. No one could’ve predicted how this would affect everyone mentally, emotionally, or physically. We would’ve preferred to have launched in 2020, but had to shift gears to adapt to our “new normal”. However, we have had more time to really plan our strategy and approach as we build our company and brand.

Any challenges we’ve gone through we’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to really lean on our corporate partners who have become part of our family. I confide in them and know they support us as we launch even in the most uncertain of times. I have also been able to meet several other local home inspectors, mostly who are welcoming to me in this business. I very much expect that I will still be greeted with a bit of resistance as females are still not the majority in the trades or in construction. Hopefully, some other young, future ladies out there will read this story and know that they, too, can be future badass women in any male-dominated industry!

As you know, we’re big fans of The Inspection Boys KC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Inspection Boys KC is a female-owned home inspection business here in the Kansas City area that educates our clients so they can make a prudent investment decision. We INSPECT and RESPECT your home! We provide discounts to first responders, veterans, teachers, and realtors.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness to me comes with perspective. If I’m in a bit of a funk, then helping someone else makes me feel a lot better. Happiness in my business would mean that my employees truly love working with me to make our company great, have fun, and of course, give back. It would also mean that my customers and partners look forward to seeing me stop by with my mascots, Bruno and Reesie, and that they trust us with their business. Bringing more smiles to KC always!
