Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly McCombs of CNVS Nails

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly McCombs.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a freelance graphic designer for over 25 years, working mostly with companies on packaging design and email marketing. My work has made its way into major retailers like Walmart, Academy Sports, and outdoor industry shops. But deep down, I always had a passion for the beauty industry and dreamed of launching something of my own one day.

That opportunity came when I replied to an Instagram story from a founder looking for someone to help start a new brand. I jumped in headfirst and was hired to handle everything from sourcing and product design to research and packaging. Once production wrapped, I shifted into building the website, managing email campaigns, and collaborating closely with the founder to bring the brand to life.

After about a year, I was offered equity in the company, and continued growing CNVS Nails behind the scenes. In late 2024, my partner stepped away and gave me the chance to take over. I said yes—and on January 1, 2025, I officially became the sole owner. Since then, I’ve taken the business full time, opened our own warehouse, brought fulfillment in-house, and continued to run everything from marketing to operations. It’s been a wild ride, but I’m more driven than ever to build something impactful and beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road—owning a small business takes a lot of grit, patience, and a willingness to figure things out as you go. We had a strong start, but like many startups, sustaining growth and consistently finding new customers has been a challenge. One of our biggest pain points early on was shipping. We experienced a lot of issues with our fulfillment provider in the first year, which not only impacted operations but also customer experience. That led me to bring fulfillment in-house so I could have more control and ensure things ran smoothly.

Shipping costs have also been an ongoing struggle. I’m always looking for ways to make our products more affordable and accessible to customers without sacrificing quality. It’s been a learning process every step of the way, but those challenges have made me more resourceful and more committed to building something lasting.

We’ve been impressed with CNVS Nails, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CNVS stands for Custom Nail Veneer System—and that name says it all. We’re revolutionizing the nail industry by offering something no other brand does: custom-fit, salon-quality nails that are ready to apply and go.

At the heart of what we do is sizing. I personally designed our proprietary line of nail sizes to solve the #1 complaint in the press-on world: nails that don’t fit. We created a 30-size sizer tool to help customers find their exact fit, and it all starts with our Starter Kit.

The Starter Kit includes everything needed to prep, apply, and cure your manicure at home. Once a customer finds their perfect sizes using the included sizer, they can subscribe to receive their custom-fit mani each month—no more wasted nails, no guesswork, just a personalized set delivered right to their door.

We currently offer two styles—almond and square—and two lengths in each style, giving our customers more freedom to match their nails to their personal style without compromising fit or quality.

We specialize in natural-looking gel nail veneers that are pre-shaped, pre-colored, and cured with an LED light to last up to two weeks. It’s a true salon-quality experience—without the time, mess, or expense.

What sets us apart is the level of care behind every order. I personally pack each one, and we fulfill everything in-house. Our customer service is top-notch because we believe every customer deserves real support and attention—something that often gets lost with larger brands.

What I’m most proud of is that CNVS isn’t just a product—it’s a personalized nail experience built to make women feel confident, seen, and empowered.
