Inspiring Conversations with Kevin Smith of Mint Family Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Smith.

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a printing expert for artwork for several years, until the industry changed enough that I needed to choose a second career. I decided to become a counselor and then wanted to specialize, so I moved towards being a marriage and family therapist. Since then, I have completed my education at Capella University and obtained full licensure. I have begun writing books and have completed two so far, with many more in the works. I have also created a therapy model called neuro-predictive relational therapy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. There are many considerations you have to make to obtain full licensure. One of the most challenging parts is choosing a supervisor, and I have had to have three, which then further complicated things by causing a restart when my job shifted to Kansas. In the end, all was well, and it cost a bit more time and money than I would have preferred, but I am now fully licensed in both Kansas and Missouri.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I moved my practice from Overland Park, KS, to Blue Springs, MO, at the beginning of 2025. I plan to add other therapists and interns in time, but for now, it is just me, a marriage and family therapist. I specialize in helping with communication and emotional management, both with individuals and couples. I prefer to work with couples, helping them reconnect and stay together. I myself have ADHD and Dyslexia, so I find myself working with the neurodivergent community in many cases. I created a therapy model that is fully systemic and focuses on reconnection and boosting communication, as well as seeing humanity as predictors, not reactors. Neuro-predictive relational therapy is what I use with my clients most of the time, but I am also educated in several other systemic models, such as SFBT and EFT.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My wife, Amy, has been my cheerleader, helping me stay focused and supporting my family while I’m away on business. She put up with late nights of writing and note-taking, as well as all the billing and CEUs required for licensure. Another mentor was my former supervisor, Nathan Croy, who helped me develop into a better therapist. Beyond that, I would have to look towards other systemic therapists such as Virginia Satir, Murray Bowen, and John Bolbey.
