Inspiring Conversations with Keith Bachand of Hearty Leaf Microgreens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Bachand.

Hi Keith, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hearty Leaf Microgreens began in November 2022, but the idea started even earlier. I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart, and at the time I was searching for a new hobby and side business that also supported my personal health goals. Several weeknights were spent driving my daughters to dance, and like many busy parents, I was eating too much fast food and not nearly enough vegetables.

That’s when I discovered microgreens—the perfect blend of health, simplicity, and a potential business opportunity. I started growing them at home using organic soil and no pesticides or chemicals. In the beginning, I started with a small operation and focused on just four varieties, taking the time to learn each and master the growing process.

Once I felt confident in the quality, I began offering direct delivery throughout Johnson County, focusing on subscriptions so customers could receive fresh microgreens on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. The response was incredible. My customers are truly the best—once people experience the flavor and health benefits of microgreens, they tend to become loyal, enthusiastic fans.

In 2024, I expanded into the Downtown Olathe Farmers Market, which was a major step forward. It allowed me to meet people face-to-face, share my story, and build relationships with customers who really appreciate fresh, local food. In 2025, I moved to the Blackbob Park market location, continuing to grow the business and connect with even more of the community.

Today, Hearty Leaf Microgreens is still rooted in the same mission: to provide delicious, nutrient-rich microgreens while helping people add fresher, healthier choices to their meals—just as I set out to do for myself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, yes—it’s been a fairly smooth journey, largely because I made the intentional decision to start small and grow only as demand increased. That approach gave me the space to learn the process, understand the nuances of each variety, and scale the business at a sustainable pace.

That said, there were challenges early on. The biggest hurdle was achieving consistent yields so I could reliably fulfill weekly subscription orders while minimizing waste. Dialing in the right conditions—seed density, germination times, watering, light, and humidity—took patience, experimentation, and a lot of repetition. This became even more challenging during the first winter months, despite growing year-round indoors, as temperature and humidity fluctuations required constant adjustment. But once I found the right formula for each variety, everything else began to fall into place. Once I mastered the growing process for the initial four varieties, I began to offer additional varieties.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hearty Leaf Microgreens?
Hearty Leaf Microgreens is all about providing fresh, nutrient-packed microgreens grown locally in Johnson County. For those who may not be familiar, microgreens are a bit of a “hidden secret” in the nutrition world—they’re young vegetables harvested at peak flavor and nutrient density, often containing far more vitamins and antioxidants than their mature counterparts. They’re incredibly versatile, too. You can add them to salads, soups, sandwiches, smoothies, or use them as a garnish to elevate just about any dish.

At Hearty Leaf Microgreens, I focus on quality above all else. I grow everything in a special blend of organic soil and organic fertilizer that I’ve refined over time to consistently produce healthy, vibrant greens. No pesticides, no chemicals—just clean, nutrient-rich microgreens grown with care.

One thing that truly sets us apart is our direct delivery service. Customers receive their microgreens within a day or two of harvest, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor. Many people are surprised at how much of a difference freshness makes and the shelf life of my product.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with the community—people know exactly where their food is coming from and who is growing it. My goal is to make it easy for anyone to add fresh, healthy greens to their meals, whether through weekly or bi-weekly subscriptions or by visiting us at the local farmers markets.

What I want readers to know is simple: microgreens are an easy, delicious way to level up your nutrition, and Hearty Leaf Microgreens is committed to growing the highest-quality greens possible and delivering them straight to your door.
