Inspiring Conversations with Justin Hoover of The Battle Within

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Hoover.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
TBW has been providing vital, wraparound mental health services since 2014, and was officially established as a 501c3 organization in 2018. Designed by licensed psychotherapists and trauma specialists, TBW’s programs have supported over 1,000 Veterans, First Responders, and Frontline Medical Personnel.

Inspired by the personal story of co-founder Adam Magers, an Iraq War Veteran who faced PTSD and a lack of accessible care, TBW is dedicated to addressing the unique mental health barriers faced by those who serve. Programs proactively reduce suicide risk and improve mental health outcomes by targeting the systemic and cultural factors that often hinder traditional treatment success.

The TBW team of seven works alongside over 100 contracted licensed mental health professionals to provide comprehensive, evidence-based services. TBW works closely with local Veteran organizations, first responder groups, and mental health providers to ensure immediate and long-term care tailored to the specific needs of our participants.

TBW programming was created with a strong focus on service-based trauma, PTSD, and other mental health challenges, ensuring that TBW provides effective, practical support for Veterans, First Responders, and Frontline Medical Personnel.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The largest challenge has been educating employers on the challenges their veteran/first responder employees face and the benefits of giving them the paid time off to attend treatments. We consistantly have people seeking our services only to not be able to take advantage of them due to not enough time off. We have spent a considerable amount of resources to educate and gain support.

Covid, one year into our inception obviously had a huge impact on our ability to serve our clients and raise funds. We are fortunate to have a supportive board and a flexible staff that was able to innovate new services and fundraising events to overcome these challenges.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At The Battle Within, we provide veterans, first responders, and frontline medical personnel the permission to believe themselves worthy of healing and offer a clear, proven path to meet their mental health goals. We pride ourselves on being able to give our clients the tools, support, and community they need to reclaim their lives.

What sets us apart is that we are founded by veterans and first responders, for veterans and first responders. Every aspect of our mission is built by those who have walked through trauma and come out the other side. Our five-day healing program is clinically-led and peer-supported, designed specifically to address the invisible wounds of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and moral injury in a way that speaks the language of those who serve.

We specialize in building trust and breaking stigma. We’re not just offering services—we’re creating a movement where veterans and first responders feel safe enough to be vulnerable, strong enough to ask for help, and empowered enough to begin healing.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of our authenticity. Our name, “The Battle Within,” speaks directly to the internal struggles so many of our brothers and sisters face. We’re known for providing life-changing experiences in an environment that feels like home, not a clinic.

We want readers to know that healing is possible—and it starts with a community that truly understands. Whether you’re a veteran, first responder, or frontline worker, you are not alone. We are here. We see you. And we’ll walk this path with you.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Veterans and first responders spend their lives serving others, often putting their own well-being last. When it comes time for them to seek help, they shouldn’t have to do it alone. It takes a supportive community to remind them that it’s not just okay to ask for help, it’s a sign of strength. Community support is also essential in ensuring programs like The Battle Within have the resources needed to meet heroes where they are and walk with them through their healing journey. Together, we can ensure those who’ve served us so selflessly receive the care and connection they deserve.
