Inspiring Conversations with Justin Goodwin of Legends Takeover League

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Goodwin

Hi Justin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For me, basketball is life and truly has been my life for as far back as I can remember. My love for the game has kept me involved for more than 40 years and in return, this sport has rewarded me with fitness, friends and a lot of great memories. Whether it be leagues, tournaments or rec, you’ve probably ran into me wherever there was an open gym. At 47, I’m blessed to still be balling on a weekly basis and yes….I’m now an official OG on the courts. 😁 But over the years, I’ve noticed a steady decline in participation in my area, which left me traveling quite a bit to get my fix on the court. The more and more ex-ballers I talked to would state they just lost interest in playing. A lot decided to pick up different sports just to stay active, like Pickleball, for example. That is where the initial spark in creating a fresh take on the sport of basketball came from. I thought if I can take the game I love and enhance it somehow, maybe I can get these players back on the hardwood. I could have easily just created your typical 5v5 adult league, charged a fee, got some refs and called it a day….but I truly felt that if I was going to do this, my league needed to stand apart from the mundane and bring a fresh, new, and exciting experience to the court. A league that promotes fitness, community, fun and competition of all levels…and with that, the Legends Takeover League was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles for me would be the immense amount of thought process to walk through a million scenarios to add the necessary rules and process. So many situations can happen on the court and to be able to incorporate my unique enhancements, I had to do a lot of mental grinding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
With the LTL, I’ve actually combined your tried and true, traditional 5v5 basketball added splashes of Pick-Up/Rec ball and spiced it with TAKEOVER enhancements similar to that of the 2K video game franchise…..stats, highlights, Top 10 countdowns, players of the week, tie game shootouts, 5 point logo shots and so much more….. Legends Takeover League is truly one of a kind!! We successfully kicked off Season 1 in April of ’24 in Nevada, MO with 4 teams, then grew to 6 teams competing in Seasons 2 and 3, finishing the year. Season 4 is booked for April 2025 back in Nevada and expanding to Carthage this spring. To be able to take a sport you love and create something new within it and then to see all levels of players and their families having such a great time and all so supportive, it’s been truly amazing.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In sports and fitness, people are always looking for a way stay active plus actually enjoy doing it. The LTL is setup for players of all skill levels who can join the baller community and have a great time competing. My goal is to keep expanding and take the LTL to multiple cities and states. sharing my creation with all those passionate for sports and are excited to try something fresh, new, familiar, fun and competitive.
