Hi Juan M, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
El Vaquero Imports began operations in 1994, founded by Juan M. González in Sioux City, Iowa. The project stemmed from his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to offer the community innovative, high-quality products at affordable prices.
From the outset, the primary objective was to introduce Mexican-made cowboy products to the U.S. market. Juan began personally importing leather goods such as boots, belts, and jackets in small quantities, focusing on the authenticity and artisanal value of Mexican products.
Thanks to his vision, perseverance, and ability to identify new business opportunities, El Vaquero Imports began expanding to other cities. In 1996, he opened his second store in Omaha, Nebraska, marking a significant step in the company’s growth.
In 1999, the business ventured into the Mexican handicrafts and pottery market, leading to the opening of a third store dedicated exclusively to this product line, thus expanding the company’s cultural and commercial offerings.
Always with a vision for growth, Juan turned his attention south, establishing new locations in the Kansas City area. In 2001, the fourth store opened in Kansas City, Missouri, and due to high demand and excellent product reception, the fifth store opened in Kansas City, Kansas, in 2004.
Today, El Vaquero Imports is the result of years of hard work, entrepreneurial vision, and a commitment to quality, solidifying its position as a company that promotes culture and generates value in every community where it operates.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of El Vaquero Imports has not been easy. Like any entrepreneurial venture, the beginnings were full of challenges and sacrifices. Starting by importing products in small quantities meant taking financial risks, learning about import processes and logistics, and complying with trade regulations, often without significant resources.
One of the main challenges was introducing Mexican cowboy and artisanal products to a new market, gaining customer trust and demonstrating the quality and authenticity of the products. Furthermore, expanding to new cities required adapting to different markets, managing multiple locations, and building committed teams.

Challenges were also faced related to consistent supply, inventory management, competition, and economic fluctuations. Each new store meant making important decisions and taking on greater responsibilities.
However, these challenges became opportunities for growth. Perseverance, a long-term vision, and a commitment to quality allowed the company to overcome each obstacle and strengthen its position. Thanks to the experience gained and the trust of its customers, El Vaquero Imports was able to consolidate its position and continue its expansion in a solid and sustainable manner.
