Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayveian Bailey.
Hi Jayveian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I remember like it was yesterday.
Growing up my pops would take me and my brother to his barber he’d been going to as a kid. Ronnie on Blue Ridge Blvd. Short story short, I asked Ronnie for a taper because I was trying to grow my hair out at the time. I ended up leaving with a bald fade and a 1 on top. Leaving the shop, I’m looking in the drivers mirror then at my brother. Finally I turned to my pops and said “I need some clippers for Christmas, I need to learn how to cut my own hair” at 12 years old (2014) I started cutting my own hair. Leaning from YouTube watching haircut tutorials.
It wasn’t until I got to (2016) highschool at Shawnee Mission South where I started cutting other people. My first ever clients were my football teammates Sam and Miles Macklin. Then it just started expanding over the next 3 years, from my other football teammates, to people I went to school with, to people who would watch my Snapchat stories. At this time it was just a hobby, I never thought I would take it seriously,
(2020) Graduating highschool I decided to take the college route, and was going to school for sports medicine. I wanted to be an athletic trainer because of my love for sports and weight lifting. COVID-19 was prevalent at the time and almost all school was online due to quarantine conditions. Being cooped up in my room, my passion for school was slipping hard. Being the people person that I am I’m used to interacting with my peers and the teacher. The online experience was not the same. After not even finishing the first semester I dropped out and decided to take a gap year.
(2020) over the next year I was cutting hair out my grandparents garage and working at Fed-ex. Basically running a small business. During Covid-19 barbershops were closed and my clientele from school and my socials were going crazy. Started to make me realize that I can make this an actual career… but at the end of the day it was just a thought.
As the year went by I stuck to the same routine. Gym. Cutting hair. Working at fed-ex. On new years I’m sitting back thinking about everything I accomplished that year (2020) and realized all I did was waste time and money. I’m 18 years old living with my grandparents not knowing what to do with my life. So I rolled the dice. I took a bet on myself. I enrolled into Headlines barber academy in the following months.
(2021) Barber school was one of the best times in my life. For the first time I was surrounded by people who wanted to do the same thing I did. Become a barber. I met some genuine people there and even have some lasting friendships to this day. Being one of the few new students that came into school knowing how to somewhat cut hair, one of my classmates gave me the name Blurry, next thing you know the whole school was calling me that. It became a representation of my personality and my work. When I went to barber school I had tunnel vision. Since I was paying for school outta of pocket I’d get there at 8am. Leave about 4:30pm. After school I’d work at UPS from 5pm- 10:30pm part time. I did this for about 6 months until one day I had finally built up enough clientele to quit my job and cut hair full time.
(2021) Graduating barber-school. I felt like a Lottery Pick in the NFL draft. I had built up a little bit of buzz in school, from my content on my socials and the respect my peers had for me. I had several different barbershops showing interest of wanting to work with me. I visited some of these shops, wanting to see if there was a place I could fit in and grow. Personally to me it seemed that most of these owners were focused on the money aspect, which isn’t a bad thing. To me, it’s never been about the money. It been about what barbering actually stands for; being a pillar in your community.
Somehow I came in contact with a man named Fred Dantzler, the owner of Officially Chopped Barbershop. He ended up booking a haircut with me while I was finishing up my last few hours up at Headlines. During the haircut we talked about the bigger picture, what I want out of life, his goals, my goals, just a genuine conversation. Made me realize that Fred was like an older version of myself, his morals and principles were aligned with my own. Seeing Fred as a future mentor I knew exactly where I wanted to be.
(2022) I signed with Officially Chopped. Shortly after I recruited some of my classmates from Headlines; Karson, Chino. Over the next year, I dedicated myself to the grind. Working long hours, hitting the gym, saving money. I was able to move out of my grandparents house and buy a brand new car off the lot.
2025) We’ve expanded the barbershop to 14 Barbers and 3 hairstylists. I became the Vice President of a non-profit called OCC ( Officially Chopped Cares) where we support at-risk youth in KC through programs that address trauma, build resilience, and create positive, life-changing experiences for families and the community through our various community events such as our Feedn KC where we provide fill thanksgiving meals to families in need, our back to school drives where we provided free cuts, backpacks, and school supplies, and various other outreach opportunities.
Having over 750+ 5 star reviews on google you can see Officially Chopped, my team, and I have been making a difference.
At 22 years old, I’m an Image Consultant, an Entrepreneur, Vice president of a non-profit, and I own a videography business. It all started with me taking a chance on myself, believing that I could make barbering a career.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the struggles I deal with are balancing my personal life with my work life. Dealing with my mental, coming in contact with over 45+ people weekly can take a toll on you. Poring all my positive energy and focus into my work, sometimes at the end of the day I have nothing left. I’m 22 years old. There will be times I want to have fun and act my age or kick with people my own age. But I know that investing the time I have now into the grind will pay off in the long run.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Blurry Enterprises ?
I’m an Image Consultant. It’s a more professional way of saying I’m a Barber.
I specialize in modern day hairstyles and gentleman haircuts. Giving the blurriest fade I can in a timely manner.
What I’m most proud of me starting out cutting my football teammates in highschool, to turning barbering into a successful business.
My services range from 40$- 80$ depending on the package you book.
I’m not one to talk myself up, I think what sets me apart from most in the energy I come with and how confident you feel when you leave my chair to go size the day and take control of your life.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
All I can say is you never know until you do it.
Quitting a my stable job to focus on my business was a risk that I made back in time and money, so was dropping out of college to figure out what I wanted to do in life.
Everything from putting myself in uncomfortable situations to force me to work harder to getting out my comfort zone to educate myself on certain topics or approaching people in public to network.
We only get one life. So why not take a risk.
