Inspiring Conversations with Emily Young of Fuse Candle Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Young.

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have been a respiratory therapist for 10 years, working in KC metro hospitals. Like many healthcare workers during the pandemic, I needed a reprieve at home. A brief search online led me to a candle-making group for beginners. Reading the content, questions, and science involved in making a candle caught my attention, and I knew this hobby would be a new obsession. The next thing I knew, I had a double boiler on the stove full of wax, and my husband was helping me measure, calculate and mix up our first candle in our kitchen. As the pandemic began to wind down, my skills significantly improved, and so did my candle-making equipment! I invited a few friends over to host a candle-pouring party; they brought the wine, and I provided the activity for the evening. My hours of research and dozens of trials and errors have given me the confidence to share my skill with others. Soon, my family, friends, and coworkers with whom I had shared my candles were beginning to ask if they could place an order. As the months went by, I spent more time in my candle studio and less at the hospital.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Like many makers, challenges arose that made me doubt myself, my product, and my vision. The self-doubt was very hard to drown out in the beginning. Can I do this? Is this what is best for my family? Is my product good enough? It all was very overwhelming, but when I finally got out of my own way, the struggles started becoming successes. Thankfully, each challenge presented to me has taught me a lesson about improvement instead of failure.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name Fuse represents my blended family with many moving parts figuring out how to act as a single unit. Candle Bar is representative of the business plan. Currently, we host home candle-pouring parties for any occasion. Baby shower, bridal shower, couples night in, you think of the reason to celebrate, and we will bring the candle bar to you!

What matters most to you? Why?
That’s a very loaded question! For the candle bar, people must know the materials they bring into their homes. A lot of things are not great in candles and home products. The regulations are becoming more strict, but they’re not there yet. Find a trusted maker who has done the research for you and can answer any question. Beyond the safety of products, it’s important to stay true to your goals despite obstacles. For me, that was changing my 9-5 to represent my family’s goals and unity. My goals have led me down a path I never saw coming, but I’m enjoying the journey and excited to see where it goes next.
