Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Abby Reed.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating from KU, instead of going to law school (my original plan) I enrolled in massage school. While in school at KU, I became a social security disability advocate and worked with disabled veterans. This was in 2007, during the height of the opioid crisis and I witnessed first hand the devastation caused by prolonged use – I felt at the time that there was another answer to helping chronic physical pain, massage school was the answer.
From there, I began my wellness career as a massage therapist working at a yoga spa, There I witnessed transformative healing with clients through integrative bodywork and movement therapy through yoga. It was this experience that would influence my healing style, later studying to become a doctor of chiropractic, acupuncturist and certified yoga teacher. Originally, our boutique practice Sacred was born in 2017 as a mobile acupuncture party business where we traveled around the Kansas City metro area while I was still associating as a chiropractor at another practice in Downtown Kansas City. In May 2020, I decided to take the leap of opening my own practice within a 120-year-old historic Victorian home called The Ivy House. To sum the experience up from 2020 to now, it has been an incredible, beautiful unfolding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think this road has been the definition of a life pivot. It has been a twisty-turny road and years of 12 hour + days. There has been a lot of patience cultivated within myself that has been required to get to this point.
One challenge was that I signed the lease to our practice in February 2020 before the pandemic hit. When everything unraveled, I had several days of complete fear and dismay but faith slowly replaced fear. For whatever reason, the divine timing was then to open and I decided to at the heart of the pandemic. It ended up being the best decision I could have ever made. Practicing in a home made people feel safe and cozy when everything was so uncertain. It has taken A LOT of grit, focus and sacrifice to get here with some painful lessons along the way but it has been all worth it!! It’s cultivated me into a very strong, focus woman and I am grateful for that becoming journey, as well as seeing Sacred take on it’s own identity and momentum for the future.
The whole experience could be compared to having a child and seeing them blossom.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sacred is a boutique chiropractic + acupuncture practice in the heart of KC. We specialize in chiropractic, wellness acupuncture and cosmetic acupuncture, which is a gentle form of Botox. Each session at Sacred is like a spa experience with aromatherapy and tranquil music in a retreat setting including a clawfoot tub that we offer therapeutic soaks. In addition to these services, we offer massage therapy with our therapist Emma Brown who integrates cupping, hot stone and intuitive bodywork into her treatments, Feng Shui for homes and workspaces as well. I host a podcast dedicated to the art of intentional life design – with topics ranging from health and wellness to beauty, to home design, to food and wine called The Sabbatical which is on Spotify and we have YouTube Channel called Love, Sacred.
I am most proud of the intentional space and energy we have created at Sacred, as well as the cosmetic acupuncture service – very few people know about this anti-aging treatment – it is the hot new trend in beauty and I am excited to offer this to Kansas City.
What does success mean to you?
A happy home, a full heart, a well-traveled life, becoming a vivacious 80 year old through health, wellness and pleasure choices along the way.
