Today we’d like to introduce you to Dimitri Golfinopoulos.
Hi Dimitri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had been an internal medicine hospitalist practicing at multiple hospitals in the Kansas City area for nearly two decades. During this time, I noticed a troubling and consistent disparity between the demographic most in need of health care and the medical industry’s ability to properly care for these patients. So many individuals in need of consistent and medical treatment were reliant on hospital care to treat and maintain chronic health conditions; however, those with the most debilitating conditions found themselves unable to safely leave their home to receive essential medical care ordinarily reserved to a Doctor’s Office. After considering this and discussing the lack of healthcare options available to individuals who are home-bound while lamenting the loss of the good old-fashioned Doctor “House call’ with my wife, we were struck with the idea for this company that cannon balled into the company it is today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We found out immediately how much of an interest that a service like ours generated within the community; however, we found ourselves in the unique position of not having much of a reference as to how a business like this would operate. Despite the need for in home Doctor’s visits that seemed apparent to everyone we spoke with, their seemed to be little to no other information on services that matched the business model we were proposing. We began as a simple mom and pop operation, we had no entrepreneurial experience and had to research the logistics, legality, and formulate a plan to figure out even if what we were proposing was possible. When we opened up shop, information about our service was word of mouth but spread rapidly. We had patients as far as Topeka wanting in home appointments. The demand quickly outweighed our resources, as it was only myself with the ability to see the patients and my wife operating the office and administration side of our service, with the addition of our children pitching in to help and a few family members coming in to help file some paperwork and take calls. Scheduling patients from all over the metro area in a way that was achievable for one Provider to accomplish while providing proper care was daunting; especially considering that I was still working nights as a hospitalist to continue being able to financially support our expanding business.
We’ve been impressed with Dimitri Golfinopoulos DO, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer health care to geriatric patients in their homes if it is difficult or too taxing to leave their home. We are able to bring laboratory, ultrasounds, X rays. Health insurance covers this service if again it is too difficult to leave home. We are very proud to offer this service to Kansas City.
What does success mean to you?
Success for me is to provide the best medical care to my patients and help avoid hospitalization.
