Inspiring Conversations with David Zuercher of RL Property Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Zuercher.

Hi David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I was the first of five children. Three sisters and a little brother. My father worked for the same non-profit company for 32 years. My mother’s full-time career was raising us five kids. I was homeschooled through the 8th grade. So some might say I wasn’t given the same scholastic opportunities as most kids that attended a traditional school.

After 8th grade, I begged my parents to allow me to go to school outside of the home. They did not want to send me to the public school where we lived, so a “private” education was the only option at that point. Since my family had no money, this also made the situation extremely daunting. I was however able to go to private school with the help of other family members and family friends that helped us over the next four years.

High school was tough on me because I was not used to the “formal” education system. Every day was a struggle. I believe I finished high school with a 2.0 GPA, and the highest I ever scored on an ACT was 17. After high school, I gave college a try, and after a month I realized I would never make it. I don’t say all that for “woe is me”, but to build the backstory of not letting anything get in your way.

Our family had NO money, and I had no books smarts. I had no college degree, and barely a high school diploma, but I wasn’t going to let any of that stop me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think a lot of people think when they see someone with “success” or “things”, they assume they were given something, or they had help, family money, etc.

I grew up with nothing. No money, no family connections, and a late start on education.

As you know, we’re big fans of RL Property Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
After high school, and knowing college wasn’t going to happen, I started in the automotive industry. I’ve been in the automotive industry for 22 years now, and I could write a book, so I’ll try and give an overview. I started off in sales, and over 22 years I’ve continued to grow, and move into the leadership role I’m currently in today.

The industry has had its ups and downs over 22 years, but giving up was never an option. The thing I tell everyone I promote to the next level in their career is to NEVER stop. When works tough, when you don’t like your “boss”, when things aren’t “fair” take a look in the mirror and ask what you need to do differently. We are NOT victims. We can only control ourselves.

Don’t blame others, instead control what you can control, and that is yourself. Do not quit, do not give up, and do not leave. I’ve climbed to the top by not walking away from the partners I work with when things were tough but instead running into the challenges head-on. In 2020, I had so many thoughts and dreams running through my head.

Many of them revolved around helping others, giving others the opportunities I had, and not only giving them but showing them how to achieve those same things for themself. Along with all that, I wanted to leave a legacy for myself and my family. So in 2020, I started RL Property Company. We are an STR (short-term rental) company, based out of Kansas City, and moving across the country.

With our guest-facing brand “Stayclusive”, we specialize in vacation stays and making the guest experience the best it can be. RLPC owns and manages our own properties, as well as other property owners’ properties. RLPC allows us to accomplish everything I wanted. I love traveling, and I wanted my friends and family who do not have that luxury to be able to enjoy and experience all that traveling has to offer.

This allows us to give them that opportunity. At the same time, we are creating financial freedom and a family legacy. At the same time, I’m able to show others how to do the same thing with their current property or help them get started creating wealth in the real estate market.

I am most proud that RLPC believes in taking care of others. We believe that the guest always comes first, and we believe in helping others create financial freedom.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
From an early age, I was involved in sports. Baseball, basketball, and soccer primarily. I played Shortstop in baseball, Center in Basketball, and Mid-Field in soccer. I was extremely competitive growing up, and I only came to win… losing was not fun, so winning became the only option.

My father was a photographer and graphic artist his entire life, and my mother was very creative, so naturally, I was drawn to art. I doodled my entire life, but never really did anything with it until I went to high school and met my first art teacher. From there I went crazy. Art competitions, traveling for competitions, drawing, and painting all the time.

I definitely was not a perfect child, but I always respected my parents, and never wanted to let them down, so as a teenager I never got into trouble. I knew the choices I made could affect the rest of my life. My parents and my grandmother were the biggest influences in my life. My father taught me life skills that I never realized until I was an adult, that he was teaching me.

My mother taught me to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do and to never put yourself in a bad situation, where you give someone the opportunity to accuse you of wrongdoing. And my grandmother was a woman that everyone should model themselves after.

She came from Hollywood California to the dry dusty fields of Kansas. A gorgeous Californian who worked hard raised a family and was a shining light to those around her.
