Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Medlin.
Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts when I was just 18 years old. I’m 29 now. I was pregnant and had just moved back to Kansas City with my family. We were living at the Ozarks for a bit. I moved back up here and needed to make some money and my mom had just started cleaning houses so I went to work with her. I quickly realized how natural cleaning came to me. I continued with her for a while but she ended up passing the business off to another girl. I went to work for her for a bit but then the environment became toxic so I left. At that same time, my sister had just started A Helping Hand, offering busy moms cleaning, organizing, laundry, grocery shopping, babysitting and pet sitting services. Anything to help take some things off their plate because she knew what it felt like to be a busy mom and need A Helping Hand sometimes! I ended up joining work with her and it was only a handful of months of my sister running the business before she needed to step away and be back home with her family and I took over the business. I continued to get many referrals from it and the business just continued to grow from there! I love what I do and I get the opportunity to really see people feel joy, peace, and contentment from the help we give them. I now have three amazing employees working alongside me who share my same values and we are looking to hire a fourth as our schedule continues to get busier!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing a business with employees can definitely be challenging at times. I’ve encountered countless difficult moments with scheduling, call-outs, employees no-showing, cars breaking down, people getting sick, the list goes on! I used to think I’d never get it figured out but we are slowing building a solid team. I also used to really struggle with having a system for hiring, scheduling with clients & employees until I found a great platform to run my business on (Jobber), and payroll but I figured all of that out with some help and it’s been a tremendous relief.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is called A Helping Hand. We make busy lives simpler. We offer cleaning, organizing and laundry help, and we love what we do. We pour our hearts into our work. We try to meet every client’s need. I like to customize my services to fit the client’s requests, not try to put them in our box. My heart is to serve and to give and that reflects in my work, and I do my best to implement that into my team. I truly don’t hire people if they don’t align with my core values, and that shows in their work and how they treat my other employees & clients. I know the good teammates when they have fun, do their best and treat others how they would want to be treated. When we’re all in alignment and have a productive team like that, we’re able to serve people at a higher capacity! We also truly love to have fun and make our days enjoyable so while we do that on the job, we also have monthly parties where we get together and let loose! Work hard, play hard! Maybe we have a bonfire, play games, go bowling, sing karaoke while wearing wigs, could be anything! It’s something the team does to build tighter bonds and better connect off the job! It’s allowed us to all form really tight relationships with one another and I love that. I am most proud of our standards and the level of detail we put into our work. With 11 years of experience myself, I have learned how to see things that need to be done, do them with excellence and efficiency. I have another employee with 12 years of professional experience who has also been a huge benefit to the team and we love helping newer cleaners learn high-efficiency standards and cleaning methods! We have a referral program. If you refer a friend, you each get $10 off your next visit.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
It’s not always going to look how you think it should look. Stay the course, trust God, and believe for good things to happen even if you can’t see them in the moment!
